There are thousands of empty properties in Birmingham - shops, offices, factories, warehouses etc; many of these are owned by the city council, corporate bodies, large companies etc. There are thousands of young graduates unable to find jobs; there are thousands of bright young people able to set up their own business (so gaining valuable work experience) Young people need our help and support as never before, leaving college & university laden with debt, with no chance of even beginning a working life. The unemployment rate among graduates has hit its highest level for more than a decade according to the ONS. 1 in 5 graduates (20%) are unemployed, with 4 out of 5 in work but likely to be roles not related to their degree qualification...a.k.a. (Burger King/Primark/Tesco etc.) Moreover, unemployed graduates in 2011 are not only competing against unemployed graduates from 2010, but they are likely to be competing with the ever-growing number of individuals that have been made redundant from the private and public sector, as the coalition government attempts to reduce the economic deficit. Added to this the retirement age is also increasing and we are competing with this too...
