Would you like the opportunity, time, and space to engage in critical discussion and learn about current issues and debates that might shape and impact your practice with young people and communities? Then please come and join our Practitioner’s Time to Connect workshop series.

Newman’s Youth & Community Work programme, in collaboration with the Centre for Community and Social Justice, is hosting a series of free workshops aimed at those who work with young people and communities. These workshops will be facilitated by academics and experienced practitioners. Each workshop is aimed at providing the opportunity for a critical, nuanced, and educational session based on practice and research to encourage reflection, share best practice, and aid the development of those who work with young people and communities.

This workshop series is focused on the broad topic of youth violence. The four workshop sessions in this series are:

25th June – ‘Thinking critically about youth work responses to youth violence’ with Dr Pete Harris, Newman University. http://ow.ly/44Bc50JEtky

10th September – ‘Young people, mental health and CCE/CSE – a small town case study’ with Katie Storer and Mike Collyer, Walsall Exploitation Reduction Team. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/341748688527

3rd December – ‘Contextual safeguarding and trauma-related youth work practice – beyond terminology, what does this look like in practice for young people and practitioners?’ with Zara McDonald and Mike Collyer, The Children’s Society & Walsall Exploitation Reduction Team. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/341757785737

22nd April 2023 – ‘Young people, peace and change: Critical Peace Education as an alternative to youth violence in youth work practice’ with Dr Michael Ogunnusi, DeMontfort University. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/341761837857

Calling all 2020 and 2021 Graduates

Newman Students' Union are inviting you to their End Of Year Celebration!

As alumni students, we recognise that you haven't had the chance to celebrate with us like you normally would have done. That's why we're hosting our event in the only place it could possibly be to make it special... Senses!

From 7pm onwards you can find us requesting the DJ to play the greatest hits from your time at Newman, and doing a few memorable dances (you all know which one I'm talking about). There will be a BBQ 5pm - 7pm in the courtyard (depending on the good old British Weather).

We really hope that you can all make it. As an SU we firmly believe in celebrating your achievements with your mates and having a catch up.... That and we really want to see your faces again after so many years.

Love NSU

In celebration of International Women's Day yesterday, we asked staff, students, families and friends to join us in celebrating the achievements of women everywhere. 🎉

Our Applied Humanities students hosted an interactive session exploring the different ways women have experienced prejudice and how we can move forward in 2022. This was followed by a workshop with special guest Marcia Lewinson, CEO of Women Acting in Today’s Society (WAITS), who led a discussion around female empowerment. The event concluded with a panel discussion hosted by Newman University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jackie Dunne.

Each session was an opportunity for women of different backgrounds, ages, cultures and faiths to actively participate in discussion about the female voice in society. If you were unable to join us last night, you can read more about the event and guest speakers by visiting: http://ow.ly/WXsl50IeYyM
