🎬🏆 THREE AWARDS FOR OUR BRACKNELL MEDIA STUDENT!

A huge congratulations to Tymur Podolskyi from Bracknell and Wokingham College, whose short animated film, Aftermath, won three of the five awards at the Escalate Arts Film Festival!

🏆 Best Story
🏆 Best Director
🏆 Best Film

Tymur created Aftermath as his final project last academic year before his teacher recommended entering it into the festival.

After being selected as a finalist, Tymur had the incredible opportunity to see his film screened in front of an audience and judged by industry professionals, who gave fantastic feedback on his talent and potential within animation.

💬 What does community mean to you?

This year’s Black History Month theme, Honouring Our Communities, gives us an opportunity to recognise the people whose contributions strengthen the places where we live, learn and work.

Communities are shaped by people: the leaders, educators, creatives, families, colleagues, neighbours and role models who make a difference every day.

Throughout October, we’ll be celebrating those contributions and encouraging our students and colleagues to learn more about Black history, culture and experiences.

If you’ve got a DSLR but aren’t quite sure what all those buttons and settings do, our Digital Photography for Beginners course will help you start taking photos with confidence.

Across four practical evening sessions, you’ll learn how to:

📷 Understand your camera settings and shooting modes
💡 Get to grips with aperture, shutter speed and ISO
🎯 Create depth of field and improve composition
🌈 Understand white balance and image quality

🖤 This October, we’re proud to celebrate Black History Month at Activate Learning.

The theme for Black History Month 2026 is Honouring Our Communities, recognising the Black people and communities whose contributions shape, support and sustain everyday life.

Throughout the month, we’ll be celebrating Black history, culture, achievements and voices, while sharing opportunities to learn, listen, read and discover more.

We’ve also brought together recommendations from our students and staff, including books, films, documentaries, podcasts, music and learning resources.

Last week our Level 2 Public Service and Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services students had the incredible opportunity to visit HMS Prince of Wales in Portsmouth – the Fleet Flagship of the Royal Navy.

Our students were treated to a guided tour of the ship and explored the carrier’s unique design featuring its two ‘islands’: the forward bridge, which is used to navigate the ship, and the rear Flying Control (FlyCo), which coordinates the movement of aircraft, vehicles and people across the flight deck.

They also learned about the ship’s ability to operate STOVL aircraft, including F-35B Lightning II stealth multirole fighters, as well as Merlin helicopters used for airborne early warning and anti-submarine warfare.

This first-hand experience gave students a valuable insight into the many varied roles available within the Royal Navy allowing them to meet serving personnel to discuss potential career pathways and see first-hand what life at sea would be like.

Experiences like this bring learning to life and reflect Activate Learning’s approach of developing the whole learner through meaningful, real-world opportunities.
