As a trainee, I listened to the Counselling Tutor podcast ritually. I never thought I would one day hear myself on there as a guest speaker.

Thank you so much for your interest in my work with neurodivergent clients.

You can listen to the episode below.

In Episode 388 of the Counselling Tutor Podcast, your hosts Rory Lees-Oakes and Ken Kelly take us through this week's three topics: Firstly, in 'Ethical, Sustainable Practice', they explore the digital counselling room - confidentiality and data security in a connected, digital world. Then in 'Pract...

When Insight Isn't Enough: The Gap Between Therapy and Real-world Change For Neurodivergent Clients

10/10/2026

Your neurodivergent client was managing well last month. This month they’re not. That’s rarely regression. Here’s what it usually is.

Capacity.

For neurodivergent people, capacity fluctuates more intensely, not just day to day but hour to hour. Having capacity in one moment says nothing about the next. It isn’t a steady line. It’s a zigzag, spiking up and down, constantly and to different degrees.

RNIF expects this. It plans for it. And it gives the client something just as important: the understanding that a dip in capacity is not a failure, and neither are they.

I'm so pleased to share that I'm now an Executive Contributor with Brainz Magazine, and my first interview is live.

It's about something I care deeply about: why understanding neurodiversity is only the beginning, and what it takes to turn that understanding into real change at home, at work and in therapy.

If you work with, live with, love or are neurodivergent, I'd love you to read it.

Why I developed RNIF.

The neurodivergent clients who came to me were not failing. They were insightful, self-aware, and often deeply motivated. Many had spent years in therapy. They had language for their experience. They understood their histories. They could articulate, with impressive clarity, what had happened to them and why. And for those that didn’t arrive with language or insight, they began to develop it in those early sessions. Through exploration of their lived experiences, by being validated by a professional, and supported by a strong therapeutic relationship. But something was missing between the work we did in sessions and the lives they went back to. The insight was real. The change wasn't sticking.
I started to think about why. And the more I thought, the more uncomfortable the answer became. It felt big, maybe too big.
It wasn't the clients. It was the model.
You can read more about the story behind RNIF and how to apply it in my book, 'When Insight Isn't Enough'.
