Bradford Birth to 19 is based at the outstanding St Edmunds Nursery School and Children’s Centre.

Working in partnership to develop highly employable, research informed, early career ready teachers who will transform the life chances of young people in their local area. We work in partnership with Bradford’s best schools and most inspirational teachers to provide a truly school lead, practically based and research informed training experience. Trainees learn at their own and pace and are suppo

What do effective classroom adaptations look like?

One of the key principles of adaptive teaching is making thoughtful adjustments that help every pupil access learning while maintaining high expectations.

Effective classroom adaptations:
✔️ Respond to pupils' needs through ongoing assessment.
✔️ Build on high-quality teaching with strategies such as modelling, scaffolding and timely feedback.
✔️ Support pupils to become increasingly independent over time.

Less effective adaptations can create unnecessary separate tasks or reduce opportunities for pupils to think for themselves.

Adaptive teaching isn't about changing what pupils learn - it's about adapting how we teach so that every learner has the opportunity to succeed.

💡 Teaching Tip of the Week

Pause before calling on someone to answer.

After asking a question, give your pupils a few extra seconds to think before inviting responses. This simple technique, often called wait time, encourages deeper thinking, increases participation and gives more pupils the confidence to contribute.

Instead of jumping straight to the first raised hand, try counting silently to five. You may be surprised by the quality of the answers - and by who chooses to join the discussion. ✨
