Reimagining Education for Sustainable Development: Applying Utopia As Method

An online session with Elke Van dermijnsbrugge

A speculative approach to thinking and taking action called Utopia as Method is used to re-imagine Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). We start with considering how ESD emerged within the context of global institutions such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in the years and decades following the Second World War, and how it is positioned now. Then, we investigate the values and conceptions of what it means to be human that are embedded in ESD and which voices are absent. We finally turn our attention to how we can imagine the idea of ‘sustainability’ differently, what alternatives to ESD might look like, and how those ideas can inform our work and lives in the present moment.

Key literature and recommended texts will be provided.

Prerequisites: none

Target audience: anyone with a personal or professional interest in (education for) sustainable development

This is a standalone online workshop on Tuesday 5 November 17.00 - 19.00 BST.

To sign up for this course, join our online learning platform on Ryver and search for ‘Utopia As Method’ in the forums menu. https://freeuniversitybrighton.org/fubo/

Happy New Year! We have a new 10-week philosophy course starting on 22nd January - Existentialism: how to live with the wonderful burden of freedom.

Existentialism argues that we are so free that we must choose not only what we do, but who we are.

This 10-week, online course will explain:

how to live with the burden of choosing what to make of our lives,

the harms that come from mainstream worldviews that deny human freedom (worldviews like laissez-faire capitalism, social conservatism, and “scientism”),

and why it’s still important to fight oppression.

Please support and share the and appeal. It's a vital lifeline to help local people with food and fuel costs this winter.

Each week, nearly 2000 children in this city rely on volunteer-run, emergency food providers for their meals. But demand has risen by 25% this year while food donations have fallen.

Please give what you can, but most importantly, please share. Thank you!
