The Brighton Effect isn’t just about getting a degree, it’s about the whole experience at the University of Brighton, that shapes your future in unexpected ways.

Meet our next ambassador Izzy James, who shares how her time here not only built lifelong friends but also directly impacted her career.

“Going to Brighton has completely shaped my life – both personally and professionally. From a personal perspective, I think the greatest takeaway I got from studying in Brighton is the group of friends I made there…I also wouldn’t have met my partner of almost a decade, if I hadn’t been introduced to him through my housemate I met in second year at Brighton.

“Professionally, I can also trace a direct link back to my degree. We were asked to do a placement module in second year, and I worked with a London based promoter called White Heat/White Light. While there, I met another company, Rockfeedback, who asked me to do an internship with them once I’d graduated.”

“The CEO at my first full time role knew the founders of Rockfeedback and so my graduate CV undoubtedly stood out to them because of that, and helped me get an interview, and the rest of my career went from there.”

We’re excited to introduce our next Brighton Effect ambassador, Natasha Baker!

After her placement year Natasha has gone on to work with some of the world’s biggest brands, Renault and Christian Dior.

Natasha shared how her time at University of Brighton set her up for success:

“The placement allowed me to become comfortable with a corporate environment – emails, Microsoft Teams, building professional relationships and learning office etiquette. More specifically though, I learned many skills that have been relevant throughout my career so far, such as liaising with internal and external stakeholders, using technological programs, invoicing and budgeting, copywriting and everything Customer Relationship Management.”

“Experience is just as important as qualifications in the current market, and it will set students apart from their peers. Building experience to put on your CV wherever you can is so beneficial and the work placement year is a solid asset that will highlight a candidate’s proactivity in developing their career.”

She also credits her course and interactive sessions with Dr. Rodrigo Lucena for bringing her learnings to life.
