School pupils from Bristol, Luton and Pembrokeshire have co‑created a new children’s book with the University, exploring airborne microfibres through hands‑on, child‑led research. Taking a Close Look at Microfibres, launched on Earth Day, grew out of the Schools Under the Microscope project, which saw around 400 pupils aged 9–11 collect the first-ever data on airborne microfibres in school environments.

Teachers praised the project for moving beyond textbook science, enabling pupils to contribute to real, open‑ended scientific research with real‑world impact.

The book is available as an e-copy and as will be hosted as a hard copy in every library in Bristol and in local schools.

Academics at the University have expanded the UK’s most comprehensive study of its kind on young people’s smartphone use. Led by Dr Benjamin Knight (SFHEA) and Dr Paul Redford , the Bristol Smartphone Experience and School Policy Project gathered insights from thousands of pupils, parents and teachers across inner-city, suburban and rural schools.

Key findings revealed that struggling pupils are most negatively affected by smartphone use, parents often underestimate the harmful content children are exposed to, and there is broad support among teachers and parents for stricter school policies.

Now, the researchers are expanding their work in this field by securing two additional funding grants for research projects on smartphone use among young people, and have attracted interest from Parliament.
