Honouring our Communites | Bristol Distinguished Address Series

Last week the first of this Autumn's BDAS event series took place at the Watershed. Stacey Olika hosted a panel of speakers; Lewis Wedlock, Andelores Chakon and Mo Ebengho to dicuss this years theme - Honouring our Communities and to celebate Black Bristol.

Huge congratulations to Charli-Ann Padilla for being awarded the highly prestigious Freelands Painting Prize 2026 🏆

Charli‑Ann's incredible painting 'Vanilla flavoured coke' was chosen from a shortlist of 12 UK student artists by a panel of independent artists.

The painting will now be exhibited at the Freelands Foundation’s gallery in London from 7 – 31 October 2026.

Congratulations to Professor Shawn Sobers, the University's Professor of Socially Engaged Practice, on receiving a Knighthood in the Royal, Civil and Military Order of the Steel Crown. 🎉

The international honour recognises his research, creative practice, and heritage leadership connected to Fairfield House in Bath, the former home in exile of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, as well as his work preserving and sharing the legacy of Ethiopian diplomat Blattengueta Heruy Wolde Selassie.

Awarded by H.R.H. Prince Antoine V of Araucania and Patagonia, the distinction celebrates contributions to human rights, equality, anti-racism, and support for exiled communities.

Reflecting on the award, Professor Sobers said the recognition motivates him to continue exploring and sharing important stories and histories that deserve to be heard and remembered.
