Bristol Vision Institute

Bristol Vision Institute Created by the University of Bristol, the BVI brings together engineers and scientists from a range of academic disciplines and external partners.

The University of Bristol Is a world leader in vision science. Bristol has a long and rich tradition at the forefront of the study of human and animal vision, artificial vision systems and imaging more generally. The University recently identified vision science as one of its core "research themes" and underlined this with the creation, in 2007, of the Bristol Vision Institute (BVI). BVI currently

functions as a virtual research institute and has been highly successful in stimulating research interaction and collaboration; It is built on the belief that interdisciplinary research is central to the future development of the field. BVI brings together engineers and scientists from a range of academic disciplines (from 14 Departments) including electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, biological sciences, experimental psychology, mathematics, biochemistry, anatomy, together with external partners such as the Bristol Eye Hospital, the Bristol Robotics Laboratory and UWE's Machine Vision Group. BVI currently represents a grouping of around 36 permanent academic staff and some 60 researchers at Bristol working on vision and imaging research and its engineering applications. The scope of the research undertaken within BVI is very wide, including:

Biomedical imaging
Camouflage
Clinical and developmental studies
Computational modelling and computer vision
Detection, tracking, classification of difficult targets
Evolution of visual systems
Eye movements and hand-eye coordination
Film, broadcast and multimedia technology
Foraging and mapping
Forensic imaging
Human and animal visual performance
Image and video compression
Locomotion
Multisensor fusion
Ophthalmology
Robot vision
Search and retrieval
Video quality assessment
Vision and learning
Vision and the creative arts
Visual aesthetics
Visual human-computer interaction, graphics and immersive environments
Visual psychophysics
Visual system modelling

Abstract deadline extended!

The deadline for submissions to the BVI Vision Researchers’ Colloquium has now been extended to Wednesday 13 May at 12:00.

The Colloquium will take place on Friday 19 June in Bristol.

We welcome talks and posters from across all areas of vision research — including sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and creative arts.

This is intended as a friendly, informal opportunity to share ideas, proposals, and work in progress — no need for completed results.

Please share with anyone who may be interested.

BVI Seminar timings feedback - we need your help!

For those of you that have previously, or currently attend any of our BVI Seminars, could you spare 5 minutes of your time?

We are looking into possible alternatives for the set-up and timings of BVI Seminars. Currently, these are held on a Friday at 4pm, lasting approximately an hour, followed by drinks and nibbles for those who would like to stay.

We are aware that holding these on a Friday at this time may not suit everyone, meaning that some are unable to participate, either online or in-person.

Therefore, we would be grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete the survey (link below) to let us have your thoughts on the current set-up and potential alternatives that may be more suitable.

The survey will be live until Friday 5 May and should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

Please note that there will not be any immediate changes to timings and any scheduled for this term will be held at 4pm on a Friday, as advertised.

We are investigating options on alternative timings for the BVI seminars. Seminars are currently held on a Friday at 4pm for around an hour, followed by drinks and nibbles for those attending in-person and who are able to stay. Each seminar will continue to be held as hybrid, to allow those who cann...

We are delighted to announce that the BVI Seminar Series is re-launching this Autumn!

The first in this series is taking place on Friday 23 September where we will be joined by Dr Paul Bodesheim from Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, who will be talking about 'Continuous Learning for Long-term Visual Monitoring'.

Please join us either in-person, or online (via Zoom). No booking required.

The line-up of speakers for the rest of the term is available on our website. Seminar details will continue to be updated -

BVI Seminars are free hour-long talks focusing on a particular area of vision research usually with an interdisciplinary flavour. They are delivered by national and international speakers from across the world with a broad appeal across the field of vision.
