Ahoy Mariners!⚓ Welcome to our page 'Mariners: Religion, Race and Empire in British Ports, 1801-1914'.

We are proud to be partnering with the Anglican Mission to Seafarers and the Hull History Centre, who hold their archives.

There are two strands to this project. The first, led by Hilary Carey and Manikarnika Dutta, explores the lives of British sailors and missions to seamen. The second, led by Sumita Mukherjee and Lucy Wray, looks at lascars – the mostly South Asian seafarers who became an increasingly significant labour force within the merchant marine throughout the nineteenth century.

We hope you will stay with us for the voyage and use this profile to keep you updated as the project develops! Please feel free to have a look at our website in the mean time: https://mar.ine.rs
