Our Speaker Series continues on Monday 7 September, 6pm with an ‘In Conversation with’ Michael Crick hosted by Mark Seddon.

Michael Crick is a prominent British television journalist, author, and broadcaster known for his tenacious investigative reporting on UK politics.

He helped launch Channel 4 News in 1982, served as BBC Newsnight Political Editor, and later returned to Channel 4 News as Political Correspondent.

He has authored a number of books including; Jeffrey Archer: Stranger than Fiction (1995) and One Party After Another: The Disruptive Life of Nigel Farage (2022).

Michael expressed deep shock and when the 2015 death of his former teacher, occasional lecturer at the University of Buckingham and close friend, Peter Farquhar, in Maids Moreton, was treated as a murder investigation.

The University of Buckingham are pleased to share that we're relaunching our Postgraduate Discount, rewarding academic achievement and recognising the loyalty of our University of Buckingham graduates.

An automatic tuition fee discount is available to graduates who completed their studies at The University of Buckingham within the previous five years (from September 2021 to September 2026) and achieved either a 2:1 or a First-Class Degree in undergraduate studies or a Distinction or Merit in postgraduate studies.

The discount is applicable on eligible Master's and PhD programmes for September 2026 and January 2027 entry and is applied as follows:

A 33% discount for those who achieved a First-Class Degree in undergraduate studies, or a Distinction in postgraduate studies
A 25% discount is for those who achieved a 2:1 in undergraduate studies or a Merit in postgraduate studies

Sadly we are having to postpone the Duck Race due to lack of water in the river, plus the closure of the bridge into Chandos Park. We hope to reschedule for the October half-term and will advertise the new date shortly.

Don't miss the upcoming annual University Duck Race. To be held from 12 noon to 2.00pm on Tuesday, 25 August. It coincides with the towns "Play in the Park" for local children.

Come along, buy a duck, enter the art competition, purchase a table and promote or sell your own wares. Food, mocktails, ice-cream and music. A great time for students, staff, alumni, townspeople, friends and family.

Donations this year will go to local charity, Alec's Angels.

Our Speaker Series continues on Wednesday 12 August with an ‘In Conversation with’ Dr Coomaraswamy hosted by Prof Harin Sellahewa and Cathrine Weerakkody.

Dr. Coomaraswamy was the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from July 2016 to December 2019. Prior to this appoint, he served the Central Bank for fifteen years, working in the Departments of Economic Research, Statistics and Bank Supervision.

Dr. Coomaraswamy completed his university education with a BA (Hons.) Degree from the University of Cambridge and went on to obtain his PhD in Economics from the University of Sussex. He joined the Central Bank of Ceylon in 1974 as a staff officer.

He held a number of senior positions at the Commonwealth Secretariat from 1990 – 2008, including Head of the Economic Affairs Division, Deputy Director of the Secretary General’s Office and Interim Director of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Social Transformation Programme Division. He was a member of the Monetary Policy Consultative Committee of CBSL from 2013 – 2015 and Advisor to the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade 2015-2016.

Dr. Coomaraswamy was also a keen sportsman. He captained Sri Lanka Rugby team and led the country to emerge runners-up at the 1974 Rugby Asiad held in Japan. He also played first-class cricket.

The University of Buckingham is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Lynette Ryals OBE as our Vice-Chancellor, she will join the University in the autumn.

Professor Ryals joins the University from Cranfield University, where she currently serves as Deputy-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Business and Management. She brings a wealth of leadership experience, a strong track record of innovation in higher education, and a deep commitment to student success.

She will lead the University's next chapter in our 50th anniversary year, building on our distinctive approach to higher education, personalised teaching and outstanding student experience. She also becomes Buckingham's first female Vice-Chancellor.

Speaking on her appointment, Professor Ryals said: “It is a great honour to be invited to lead such a unique and distinctive institution. Together, we will build on the University’s proud heritage of education innovation and excellent student experience, augmenting those strengths with the possibilities offered by new technologies in learning and teaching to forge an international reputation for an exceptional higher education experience and outstanding student outcomes.”
