June throwback - the last proper month of the teaching year and of this series, June is always an incredible month for us on Land & Wildlife, so much to see and do! We enjoyed field trips to National Trust attractions such as Brownsea Island and Lydford Gorge did some tractor driving, lots of practical habitat management including strimming and chipping, finished our boardwalks, enjoyed lots of species ID and celebrated the awesome Edie who won best land based student and overall student of the year! **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new prospective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

May throwback - a beautiful month where we had loads of cool outdoors stuff going on - we hosted some short courses, including a Forest School learning day, and spent time preparing for our Devon County Show stand. The students then did an incredible job of making it happen, where members of the public got involved with craft activities and woodland trails. We also enjoyed some species identification both on and off site, taking full advantage of the nicer weather and abundance of wildlife. **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new prospective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

Throwback to April on the course - a little less to report this time due to the Easter holidays and last of the exams. Activities included finishing the boardwalks and surveying surrounding flora, tree felling to allow more light to pe*****te the ground flora in a small woodland, building leaky dams in our wet woodland and pitfall trapping for invertebrates. **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new perspective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

Throwback to March - With Spring on the way there was much to see and do, what a bumper month it was! We had more field trips to meet up the RSPB at beautiful Bowling Green Marsh. Exams continued on, but we still spent loads of time outdoors doing things like fencing projects, learning Forest School bushcraft skills, burnt some brash, felled some trees, continued the pond improvement project and also discovered that the Beavers from local watercourses had expanded into our nature reserve on site! **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new prospective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

Continuing our throwback series - here’s some of what students got up to in February. It was a very rainy month after severe flooding, which seems hard to imagine now, but students were working hard to complete there exams which included offsite bird surveying at the wonderful Ottery Estuary. We also did some work to help the agriculture team by providing Woodchip for some of the paths on the farm, and created steps to better access the new Arboriculture centre. **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new prospective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

Throwback to January 2026 on Land & Wildlife. A new year, same rain and mud! The boardwalk project continued, and we provided a treat to our volunteers in the form of hot chocolate and biscuits. There was an offsite trip to Haldon Forest Park - Forestry England to assist with some small tree felling, and of course this was the month that where the rain got heavier and heavier, this would have some knock on effects for our exams later on… **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new prospective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

Throwback to December 2025 on Land & Wildlife. A month of extra rain and mud, but our students cracked on and led agriculture students with the construction of boardwalks, tools quiz and gave a guided tour around the wild spaces on campus. Throwback to November 2025 on Land & Wildlife. This was a busy month! We explored the River Otter & Estuary, and continuing on a freshwater theme also had student presentations about wetland types, as well as more work on the pond area. Brushcutters were fully serviced and sharpened ready for student use, and we got to some great places - meeting with volunteers at Bowling Green Marsh, learning about White Clawed Crayfish conservation and getting stuck into a tree planting project and then visiting to look at the environmental interpretation. **these posts are just a snapshot of some of the things students get up to on the course, and are being shown to help new prospective students get an idea of what the course might involve, month by month**

Throwback to October 2025 on Land & Wildlife. Students learned how to use our Quadbike for lessons on landbased machinery. For practical conservation we started a project to improve the area in and around the pond, which involved everything from waders to winches to chainsaws! We also went on some Fungi forays and explored the wetland on the farm, created courtesy of the Eurasian Beaver that was reintroduced onto the River Otter in 2014. Wood-chipping! Last month our students have been helping the farm to turn waste brash into a usable resource. We often use woodchip as a natural surface for our paths, and it’s an impressive (and noisy) piece of machinery to use 🪵
