Music Degrees - University Studies at West Suffolk College

ILC Music Degrees held their second free online industry session yesterday. It was great to see that many students from West Suffolk College, Suffolk One and even internationally had joined. The session was so popular that not everyone could gain a place online. ILC Music Graduate and Mix engineer Davide Lombardi has worked for Ed Sheeran, Dido, Tom Jones, Elton John and many more well known artists returned to the degree to give an overview of his career, tips of how to get into the industry and answered student questions.

Overall reinforcing that the degree is invaluable as many companies no longer hire without a high level of prior education and experience. Davide highlighted all of the many jobs within the industry and again how essential networking is for routes into the industry as can be supplied via the degree. The Live Sound BSc (Hons) provides full industry engagement with professional companies such as Britannia Row and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Our Music degree students have benefited from an online tutorial hosted by a multi-platinum award-winning producer.

George Shilling, who has worked with the likes of Ocean Colour Scene and Primal Scream, held a special ‘Tips and Tricks from the Music Industry’ alongside fellow producer Dennis Weinreich, who lists Eric Clapton and Miles Davis among his collaborations.

The online session was attended by more than 20 students on the college’s BA (Hons) Creative and Commercial Music course as well as some of next year’s new applicants.

The pop hit-maker behind a host of 90s stars, from East 17 to Kylie Minogue, Boyzone and Rick Astley, gave an inspirational talk with Music Degree students.

Phil Harding began his career in the music industry at the age of 16, at the famous Marquee Studios in London. Engineering for bands including The Clash and Killing Joke, Phil went on to join the legendary Stock, Aitken and Waterman production team throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, engineering and mixing their first number one single, Dead or Alive’s ‘You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)’.

Phil went on to produce many of the biggest pop hits of the 1990’s, working with everyone from Bananarama to the Pet Shop Boys, Jason Donovan, Mel and Kim, Erasure and Sinitta.

It was wonderful to be at the Newham Festival with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra yesterday. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra were playing one of our degree programme games compositions from the ‘Scoring for Games Project’.
