The Opportunity

Reporting into the HR Manager, this is an opportunity for a positive-thinking, energetic and proactive individual to join the HR team at Caius, where daily you will be supporting up to 250 staff, including Heads of department, line managers and employees throughout all stages of the employment life cycle. We are looking for a Kitchen Porter to work in the College Kitchens, supporting the chefs in charge in the preparation of the cooking of meals and organisation of the kitchen function. The role also includes actively engaging with our staff and clients.

This role is a 12-month fixed term position covering a period of maternity leave, with the potential to extend for a further 3 months. The successful candidate will report directly to the Master of Gonville & Caius College in the University of Cambridge, to whom you will provide comprehensive and professional secretarial assistance. Regular duties will include diary management, general administration, reception of guests and visitors, and drafting of correspondence and papers. You will liaise on behalf of the Master with contacts both internally and externally to the College, and across the wider Collegiate University, working closely with the Development Office and President over events and invitations.

This is a critical role in support of the Master who chairs the College Council and the General Meeting of Fellows. The Master provides leadership and guidance in promoting scholarship and academic excellence, maintaining and improving academic facilities, and planning future developments necessary for the effective operation of the College. The Master also holds a number of external roles for which the Master’s PA provides administrative support, as well as constituting a focal point for the College’s relationship with its Members: Fellows, students, staff and alumni. You will also coordinate any hosting and travel arrangements in respect of the Master’s many varied engagements. Additionally, this role comes with the line management responsibility of the Master’s Office Administrative Assistant who works part-time during term time to assist in supporting a busy office.

The role-holder also acts as assistant to the Registrary who has a key role in drafting, disseminating and recording the agenda and decisions of the College Council, and General Meeting of Fellows. You will support the Master and the Registrary in compiling the agenda for College Council and the General Meeting of Fellows, and support the Registrary in taking the minutes of those meetings and communicating the outcomes of the meetings, recording and publicising the details of these to the Fellowship.

Due to the varied duties of the post, there is considerable scope for the postholder to take initiative. You will need to maintain an efficient, smoothly run office, capably managing the varied and demanding workload with a smile. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders. You must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of data protection requirements, competence with technology, and discretion in relation to areas requiring confidentiality.

This is a 12-month fixed term (maternity cover) position, with the potential to extend for a further 3 months. Candidates must be available to start from the beginning of April 2022. The hours of work are Monday to Friday, 37.5 per week, some flexibility to accommodate committee meetings will be required.

Do you have a real passion for cooking and would love a career as a Chef?

Would you like to earn whilst you learn?

We are offering the opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join the College and learn to become a chef. Over a 12–15 month period you will be fully trained to become a chef under a Commis Chef Apprenticeship (Level 2). You do not need to have any experience as training will be provided. You will be joining Caius at an exciting time as it travels on a journey to deliver food excellence throughout its food provision.

This opportunity is ideal for anyone of any age, from school leaver to someone who simply wants a career change and has a passion for cooking. Apprenticeships are for everyone regardless of age and training is fully-funded as part of the role.

You will report to the Head Chef and Sous Chefs, you will gain experience of working in a varied number of sections within the Kitchen including vegetable, larder and pastry. You should be willing to train and to learn new techniques in all of these areas.

Over a structured 12-15 month period our apprenticeship programme combines all these aspects with studying towards your Level 2 Commis Chef qualification.

The programme includes:

- A fully funded Level 2 Commis Apprenticeship programme studying in partnership with Catch 22, enhanced by on-the-job vocational training

- 20% of work hours spent in training

Gonville & Caius College is seeking an outstanding individual to join its Development & Alumni Relations team as an Engagement Assistant.

You will be the first point of contact for Caius alumni and friends, hands-on in organisation of our engagement programme, and the key to ensuring alumni and friends are supported in their ongoing relationship with the College.
As a person with excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, and with good attention to detail, you will be integral to the success of the development and alumni relations operations.

We are looking for Casual Waiting Staff to start work in the College Catering Department, as soon as possible. The role will involve carrying out a variety of tasks to assist in the delivery of service in all the College rooms as required, maintaining a high level of food service and cleanliness throughout.
