MANIFESTO DEEP DIVE: LGBTQ+ OFFICER

What is an LGBTQ+ Officer? Like the Climate Officer, the LGBTQ+ Officer would join Cambridge SU as a paid sabbatical position. Their areas of focus would include fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition, advising colleges and university bodies on LGBTQ+-friendly practice, as well as creating events and initiatives around LGBTQ+ identity at Cambridge.

Why do we need one? LGBTQ+ Students at Cambridge need a centralised point of contact to work with J/MCRs and the LGBT+ Campaign who can lead activities and provide direction, whilst holding colleges and departments to account.

When Gonville and Caius unacceptably called supporting LGBTQ+ rights a 'political stance' this highlighted the need of an officer to speak out and spearhead protests against this.

The Out at Cambridge report by lgbtQ+ published in February 2021 recommended: compulsory diversity and inclusion training for staff. more visibly publicising and promoting existing LGBTQ+ activities and networks. ensuring the future presence of LGBTQ+ related lectures, seminars, and workshops which are open for university members of all disciplines. The importance of small gestures, such as using examples in lectures of LGBTQ+ topics, adding pronouns to email signatures... and simply acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ+ people' perspectives and experiences.

These recommendations highlight areas of improvement for the University within LGBTQ+ issues and hence provide a useful flavour of what an LGBTQ+ officer could work on.

The first of my manifesto deep dives - giving an in depth look at one of my manifesto points. The first deep dive is on my pledge to create a climate officer sabbatical role!

MANIFESTO DEEP DIVE: CLIMATE OFFICER

What is a Climate Officer? A Climate Officer would join Cambridge SU as a paid sabbatical position. Their areas of focus would include net zero strategies, climate justice and education, intercollegiate sustainability projects, and fossil fuel divestment, as well as being a point of contact for all climate networks and projects at Cambridge.

Why do we need one? The creation of a Climate Officer role would enable the post holder to focus entirely on the climate aspect of Cambridge University. Climate change demands fast, urgent action as it will have devastating consequences for all, and it's time for Cambridge to treat it as such.

By not having a Climate Officer, the pressing issue of climate change loses its focus and power. We cannot afford this. I will source funding and define this role with input from current student societies so climate change will get the attention it deserves at Cambridge.
