Deputy Head Porter, David Wright, is cycling for charity in the Tour de 4 this Sunday! 🚴

The Tour de 4 is a cycling event launched by six-time Olympic gold medalist Sir Chris Hoy following his Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, which starts and finishes at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

David is undertaking the blue route, a challenging 37-mile round trip. He's a seasoned professional, having completed 'Lejog', the iconic long distance ride from Land's End to John o'Groats, last year to raise money for Asthma + Lung UK in honour of Wolfson's late Head Porter, Andrew Fowles.

David said, "I'm doing this bike ride on September 6 with a good friend who has recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer. It's mainly about raising awareness and understanding, but also trying to raise funds to help support people with Stage 4 cancer."

PhD student Fatemeh Nabizadeh reflects on her journey from a small city in Iran to Wolfson and her hopes for a future in science thanks to the Shoman International PhD Scholarship.

"When I’m in the lab, I often think about the journey that brought me here. From a small city where opportunity was a dream, to one of the greatest universities in the world. That distance, that impossible distance, was bridged by kindness.

“Thanks to my scholarship, I am not just doing research, I am building hope. And I carry with me the dreams of so many young women from my homeland who still believe that one day, they too will be seen, heard, and empowered."

Our Porters are over the moon with their eclipse glasses 😎

Tonight the UK is experiencing a partial solar eclipse, the biggest this century! The peak viewing time in Cambridge will be 19:12, when we'll see over 90% of the sun obscured by the moon 🌕

There's another magnificent celestial event tonight too, the Perseid meteor shower, which is set to peak overnight tonight after dusk gives way to darkness 🌠

If you do plan to watch the eclipse, please don't look directly at the sun, and follow official guidance to stay safe, including suitable eye protection - as modelled by our wonderful Porters! ☀

Huge congratulations to all 122 Wolfson students who graduated on Saturday! 🥂

On Friday, our Tutorial team and student ambassadors welcomed prospective students with icebreakers, tours of the College, a Q&A session with current students as well as an introduction to Wolfson from our Vice President Dr Kevin Greenbank.

Presidents past and present joined Press Fellows, colleagues and friends to mark Professor John Naughton’s 30 years as the Director of Wolfson's Press Fellowship Programme.

The celebration included speeches from Wolfson President Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu recounting John’s words of wisdom to her as well as his many achievements over the years. John also gave a speech about his time at the College and of leading the Press Fellowship.

The audience included this year’s Press Fellows as well as members from previous cohorts joining the celebration online, much to John’s surprise and delight.

John’s departure from the Press Fellowship Programme is by no means a sign that he is slowing down, with plenty of ongoing areas of work including working on a book.

He said: “I’m going to continue to do what I do normally. My research centre in the University has been extended for three years,” (the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, which John co-founded in 2020), “I’ve got my weekly column in The Observer,” (which he’s been writing since 1987), “and I’ve got my blog, Memex 1.1, which has been going forever.”

Since its inception in 1982, the Programme has welcomed over 360 journalists from 47 countries, many of whom John has worked with since he became director in 1996.

Wolfson's very own Head Porter, Danny Kelly, recently appeared on an episode of the podcast Voices from Cambridge 🎤

Danny spoke about his career as a firefighter in Cambridge, the vital role that Porters play at Wolfson, and the importance of communication.

30 of our Wolfson students processed to Senate House in style last week for graduation 🎓

Graduates celebrated receiving BA, BA/MEng, BA/MSci, BA/MMath and VetMB degrees in the traditional ceremony, rehearsed in the Lee Hall.

Alongside their studies, a small group of MPhil students organised and ran a series of thought-provoking events and activities at Wolfson to mark Refugee Week and engage the College community 🌍

Highlights of the programme included a reading group exploring displacement, migration, and belonging, a film screening and panel discussion, and a trail through the College gardens highlighting the realities of displacement driven by climate change.

Reflecting on their experience, Refugee Week Organising Committee members, Giulia Ciraolo and Rhoda Adjoa Nyarko, spoke with Simona Obeng, Wolfson’s Community & Leadership Impact Coordinator, about the inspiration behind the events, the impact they had on the College community, and what they learned along the way.
