Our MSc students had a fantastic time on their field course to France - exploring a range of amazing habitats and learning about their ecology. The wildlife has been 👌, just look at that flamingo! 😍

We've just returned from our annual Shropshire field residential kindly hosted by the Field Studies Council at their Preston Montford HQ with our fantastic Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students!

Toby Carter, Sarah Hart, Jim Littlemore, Kevin Bright and Danni Green were so impressed by the enthusiasm, determination, and drive of our wonderful students! Activities ranged from a guided walk at Stiperstones NNR with Simon Cooter of Natural England, talks from the likes of Charlie Bell from the National Trust, and of course a whole host of fieldwork activities on the hunt for otters, polecats, great crested newts, white clawed crayfish, upland birds, ancient woodland flora, and more!

This field course is specifically designed to tackle Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) graduate competencies!

On a dreary Monday morning, feast your eyes on the wonderful images shared by student Adithyan K A! More cake anyone?!

Technical information shares form an important part of our employability agenda for Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students. So we were stoked to welcome in James Stevens and Antony Bagott from TRAFFIC to Anglia Ruskin University.

TRAFFIC provides evidence, solutions, and influence to ensure that trade in wild species is legal and sustainable for the benefit of the planet and people. Our special guests led an expert series of interactive seminars on how to fight illegal wildlife trade for our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

We are grateful to Stephanie Pendry in helping to set this valuable learning opportunity up for our students. And many thanks to our very own experts and session facilitators - Profs Danni Green and Jake Dunn.

This week our intrepid Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students joined myself and James McAdie from Froglife for the practical part of their protected species training kindly funded by Anglia Ruskin University!

On the hunt for amphibians, students were able to deploy and check humane capture funnel traps under license, carry out torch light surveys, as well undertake some biometric image capture of great-crested newts using our one of a kind 'Newt-onator' device for the latest iteration of our autonomous wildlife identification project with Maria J. Duarte Rosa and Chung-Man Tang!

Many thanks to Guy Belcher from Cambridge City Council and Lucy Robison-Smith BSc (Hons) MCIEEM from National Highways for access permissions.

Fun fact of the day - did you know the collective noun for newts is an 'armada'?!

Today we are stoked to welcome in Principal Arboriculturist & Town Planner Matt Searle from TreeWorks who is currently chatting to Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students about the challenges of managing urban trees.

Matt is currently sharing some fascinating case-studies and is a true ambassador for upholding the environmental value of urban forests and the intricacies of tree care in lieu of development.

This week, our first year Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students took a trip down to explore Therfield Heath Nature Reserve - a 420 acre chalk grassland habitat famed for its population of rare and colourful pasqueflowers!

Hosted by the like-minded folk of the Friends of Therfield Heath & Greens, students were able to practice their botanical skills by scouring the hillsides for chalk grassland rarities - a day well spent!

The valuable field-based skills taught here at Anglia Ruskin University have no doubt inspired the success of our students, as our team has made the final of the Botanical University Challenge 2026 - check out more information here: https://lnkd.in/ejNaFZPu

The Primate Society of Great Britain has just launched a new initiative: Primatology Profiles!

Each month, they are interviewing a Primatologist to discuss their work and background, ultimately showcasing who they are and what they do.

The first profile is live, featuring an interview with ARU's own Prof. Jacob Dunn.

Through these conversations with a diverse group of contributors, this project recognises Primatology as an intricate and practical field with many forms of engagement. This can range from researchers studying behaviour and physiology to ask questions concerning evolution and ecology, to conservationists working for policy change, and those directly involved with primates day to day in captive care facilities.

The hope is to show those with aspirations of being involved in Primatology that there is no one way to shape your career. Importantly, every person working in Primatology holds a unique story of how they made it to their position, showing no-one need limit themselves by their background. The one thing shared by all is a passion and desire to contribute.

This project is being led by the fantastic Stuart Thompson, as part of an internship with PSGB

This week, second year Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge relocated to south Devon for their annual residential field course hosted by those wonderful folk at the Field Studies Council.

Enjoying the traditional 'four seasons in a day' coastal climate, students have been undertaking a wide array of ingenious ecological surveys in their search for local wildlife. Highlights included a nosey otter breaking the fourth wall in camera trap footage, evening bat walks recording scarce barbastelle bats, and botanical surveys to find the rare strapwort and bask in vernal woodland flowers across Slapton Ley and surrounds.
