Our second Creating the Future conversation lit up the room last week with big questions about where our news comes from, who shapes it, and how we make sense of the world in an age of constant information flow 🗞️✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and online for this rich and thought-provoking discussion featuring Clare Melford, Co-founder and CEO of the Global Disinformation Index, and Felicia Yap, Author and Producer of psychological thrillers ‘Future Perfect’ and ‘Yesterday’. We are delighted to celebrate Sidney student Nio Folorunso, who featured in The Fostering Network’s Tick the Box campaign last week. Nio completed The Cambridge Foundation Year at Sidney last year and is now a first year Philosophy student. His story is a reminder of what can happen when meets the right support network.

Nio reflects powerfully on the impact of declaring care experience on his UCAS form. As he puts it: ‘Ticking the box that shows I am a care leaver on my application allowed me so much of the crucial that I have and continue to receive at university here. I realised how much the staff want me to do well, which keeps me going and motivated even now in my second year at Cambridge.’

As Dr Ruth Jackson Ravenscroft, Director of Studies for The Cambridge Foundation Year, shares: ‘Nio threw himself into his Foundation Year studies, taking the opportunity to study a range of topics across different disciplines, from the history of the English language to the role of data in sport. He also wrote a first-class dissertation exploring the role of religion in the Nigerian Civil War. It was a joy to teach him, and we are absolutely delighted that he is now studying on the at Sidney.’

Nio’s journey shows why declaring care experience on a form matters. Ticking the box connects applicants to the financial, pastoral, and practical support that ensures they can thrive once they arrive.

As part of our Forward Together celebration, each Fellows Spotlight features one of Sidney’s remarkable female Fellows. This month we highlight Dr Özge Öner, newly elected Vice-Master and a leading voice in academia and public life.

Özge’s influence extends well beyond Cambridge. She was recently honoured in Istanbul with the Women Who Make a Difference - Science Award, a national recognition presented at an event that also marked the launch of her new book, Herkes Biliyor Geminin Su Aldığını (‘Everybody Knows that the Boat Is Leaking’). The ceremony brought together leading figures from , media, and civil society – a testament to her role as a prominent public intellectual.

Earlier this year, she received the Prize for Human Flourishing in Stockholm, awarded to individuals whose research or public engagement deepens understanding of the and conditions that enable people and communities to thrive.

Through her scholarship, , and public voice, Özge exemplifies the values at the heart of Sidney.
