It was a delight to hold the annual Palmerston Society Dinner yesterday evening. Following its absence for 2 years due to the Pandemic, it was great for everyone to come together.

We hope to see everyone soon. Keep an eye out for further details on our Garden Party.

Maryam (she/her) is a first year HSPS student at St John’s College and the new Secretary of the Palmerston Society! Before coming to Cambridge, she was the Chair of the School Council and Deputy Member of Youth Parliament. Currently, she is the Ethnic Minorities Officer for the JCR, a St John’s Outreach Ambassador and a Freshers Rep for the Cambridge Majlis. Maryam, as a London girl from a Pakistani background, who went to a state school, is focused on issues to do with social mobility and increasing diverse representation. She hopes to have more fun social events for social science students to interact, as well as create events open to everyone such as debates and speeches! Hopefully the current situation will get better and the Palmerston Society will be back running some super interesting events in the near future :)

Christian (he/ him)studied in HK prior to coming to Cambridge, and currently holds two scholarships - the St John’s Scholarship, and the Prince Philip Scholarship. Back in high school, he was the President of the MUN club, secretary of the debate team, and chairperson of the class representatives committee. Currently in Uni, he is also engaged in CUUNA, the CU, and the JCR here at John’s. Politics, international affairs and social issues has always been his passion, and in the past, he has given talks on topics such as toxic masculinity and the elderly care crisis. While there is still much uncertainty with the whole COVID situation, he hopes to kickstart the society by collaborating with other groups to bring you interesting talks and forums, and if the situation allows for it, much anticipated (and deserved) social events. Stay tuned! ☺️

Teodor (he/him) is a first year undergraduate studying HSPS at St John's and is most excited to take on the role of President of the Palmerston Society for the 2021/22 term! Born and raised in Romania, he is passionate about – who would've guessed? – politics and sociology, particularly about electoral politics, social movements and issues of intersectionality. In high school, he was highly active in the Romanian Model UN circuit and a member of Romania's National Debating Team (in two consecutive years). A recipient of the Nathoo Bursary, since starting university, he has taken up competitive debating as part of the Cambridge Union, while also coaching both debaters in his high school back home, as well as the National Team which he used to be a part of. Though everyone's plans have changed in one way or another because of the COVID-19 pandemic, here's one commitment that Teodor intends to stand by, no matter the circumstances: the Palmerston Society will be back in business, here to bring together – for academic, as well as socialising purposes – all those interested in the social sciences, at John's and beyond. Stick with us – great things are coming!
