👏💻 A huge congratulations to Lucy Economics postgrads, Luke Petronijevich-McDowell and Wen Chong Cheah, who came in first place at the Cambridge Policy Hackathon at Judge Business School last weekend.

“I joined the Cambridge Policy Hackathon with Luke and 2 friends from other colleges. Our prompt was to think of a solution to tackle cross-border payment fraud. We proposed the establishment of a global fraud information database that will be managed by a consortium of central banks and overseen by the BIS/FATF.

The key issue that prevents this happening today is that banks are reluctant to share client information with each other. We propose to employ blockchain technology to mask the identities of users such that only the client’s banks can see them when sharing information. Another problem is that banks in the Global South or developing countries lack the incentive to join multilateral organisations. So we propose a global fund that provides technical assistance to these banks to motivate them to join the information sharing platform.”
