It was a privilege to welcome Alannah Weston and her long-time friend, Mustafa Abbas to College for an inspiring fireside chat about philanthropy, empathy, and building self-sustaining systems across industry.

The discussion was followed by a ceremony, officially welcoming Alannah into the Lucy Cavendish College community as an Honorary Fellow.

⛷️🎭 Are you looking to try something new whilst at Cambridge? Or continue doing something you love? The popular Making the Most of Cambridge Fund is open for 2026/2027. Now in it’s fifth year and kindly supported by generous donations, the MTMOCF provides an exciting opportunity for all undergraduate students to apply to receive up to £150 to optimise their co- and extra-curricular activities, with priority given to incoming undergraduate students.

Looking for inspiration from past funding recipients?

Last year, we awarded £29,374 in awards of up to £150 to over 200 students!

One third of these awards supported students with the costs of sports such as equipment or travel to competitions, and over 30 students joined the Cambridge Union.

If you’re looking to do something a little different, we encourage varied applications and have in the past awarded money for bouldering classes, musical equipment, gym membership, attending a May Ball or Varsity Ski trip!

Please note that this is a limited pot of funding, and applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis until the funding runs out.

The CLIFF event, "From Snow to Floods: Understanding Water in the Himalayas" will take place on 22 October at 5:30pm in the Wood-Legh Room.

The Himalayas hold one of the largest stores of snow and ice outside the polar regions. The rivers they feed supply drinking water, irrigation and hydroelectric power to millions of people across South Asia. Yet measuring how much snow actually falls in these mountains has long been one of the hardest problems in climate science, because weather stations are few and far between at high altitude and the terrain is extreme.

In the light of the recent devastating floods in Nepal, Dr Gumber will show how innovative field observations from India, combined with modelling expertise from Cambridge and the UK, can help predict the Himalayan snowfall that leads to floods. Drawing on his research with high-resolution regional climate models, he will explain why snowfall in the region may have been underestimated for years, and what more accurate estimates could mean for flood forecasting, disaster preparedness and long-term water security.
