St. Catharine's has unfortunately lost one of the great spokes of our sporting community, Dr. Oliver, who passed away a few days ago. For countless generations of Catz students, "Poliver" has been the go-to person for all the sporting highs and lows; whether they be Catz, individual or university. His wealth of knowledge on college sporting history, boundless love of the wheel, and determination to represent the interests of students ensured that members of college have had the opportunity to excel both within and beyond academia during their time at Cambridge.

The sporting community of Catz - past, present and future - will always be extremely grateful for Dr. Oliver's unending support. He will be sorely missed.

It is with great sadness that the College has learnt that Dr Philip Oliver (1988), Emeritus Fellow of the College, died in Cambridge on Saturday 13 June after an unexpected illness. Professor Sir Mark Welland, Master of St Catharine’s, commented, “Dr Oliver made so many important contributions to life at St Catharine’s, which he continued after his retirement. He will be very sorely missed by the whole community, past and present.” Further information to follow.

winner winner new plate for dinner!!! Huge congrats to the Mens 1s for an incredible victory against Girton in the Plate final. 🔥⚽️

Match report: The previous time Catz met Girton they went 2-0 up before succumbing 4-3 in an ill-tempered encounter. Pride was at stake, and so was the Plate.
Fairer weather promised than for the wind-swept semi-final, but rain, having held off for much of the day, came down for most of the first half; the forecast darkened for Catz after only a minute of play when a mix-up led to a strange and scrambled goal. Girton were strong opposition, but one felt an equaliser would right things: though Catz did well to get back in the game, and retained their focus after a nasty injury saw one of the Girton forwards carried off the pitch in obvious distress, we couldn’t pe*****te. Girton snatched a second, and though we looked to have pulled one back before the break, the lino flagged for offside.

With the gaffer laid up in Germany, and the team a pair down in Cambridge, the wheels, if not exactly off, were wobbling. The response was a second half we bossed from the off. Our first goal, from a corner, bought us time and momentum - but the equaliser was a perilously long time coming: when it did it sparked wild scenes among a decent, mainly Catz crowd.

There were glimpses of a winner, but with players succumbing to cramp, and a weak sun now low in the March sky, the game went to extra time. Chances came and went at both ends, Catz players were carded and at length sin-binned, and Girton rattled the woodwork at the death; it would have been too late and too weary to fight back again.
And so to penalties: it was Catz nerve and technique that held as the light dimmed, and a pitch invasion saw players and fans in a happy huddle. By this time the moon was up: silver in the sky, silver in the hand

Final score: Catz 2 Girton 2 AET (3-1 pens)

Amidst threats from a scary bloke named Dennis, Catz put on a great display of football in marking the date for the first annual SCCAFC x SCCWAFC game.
A lack of numbers (and colour coordination) meant a slow first half (read: quarter) though, thanks to a tactical resizing of the pitch, the 2nd half yielded a much higher intensity with plenty of goals coming from both sides including some slick finishes from Sophie Dunning as well as Ellie Davis, already completing her New Year's resolution of scoring for the wheel, and Rebecca Hunt with a last minute tricky finish, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Also shoutout to Noor Jafree for snapping some action shots mid-game!

Final result: Team two - some, Team one - some plus a few more.
Wheely good football all round!

*Mens hockey Cuppers quarter finals*

This Sunday the boys of SCCHC took up sticks for our opening match of cuppers against a coalition of Pembroke and a bunch of choppers who live opposite cindies. The lads braved the wrath of storm Ciara and ignored the amber weather warning (the only colours we know are claret and rose) to make it the Astro, where we would begin our road to cuppers redemption after crashing out in 3 semi finals last year. The Pembroke-Bin juice coalition initially seemed pretty eager, with over 11 players turning up on time, what choppers. When catz 11th man finally showed up a good 20 mins after the arranged pushback (fashionably late) the game got underway. After soaking up some initial pressure and some solid D; the wheel opened its account with a reverse stick screamer from Alicia Murphy, punishing the oppo for there lack of a keeper and catz finished the accurately timed first half with a fragile 1-0 lead. As excepted the Pembroke weren’t gonna go down without a fight, unfortunately for them the bin juice half of their team prevailed and Harry Cox showed off his dutty hands to put one in the unkept goal. 2-0 Catz. The rest of the game would prove to be all catz, but after some bullish defending from the choppers in blue and some squandered chances catz failed to extend their lead and the game finished 2-0. Man of the Match goes to Soleh Cifonelli for adapting to his ‘left handed stick’ seamlessly and brilliantly leading a high forward line - always threatening.

After beating Christ’s 45-0 with the egg, 7-2 on the football pitch and sending them crashing out of hockey cuppers, catz students now eat free in Christ’s hall.

Since we are still adminning the weekly email here is a quick post to round-up the highlights from this weekend! An excellent show for the wheel-start as we mean to go on?! ☸️

Athletics Cuppers: Catz SMASHED it at the Autumn Athletics Cuppers this weekend! There were 7 female athletes who managed to secure a position of 3rd (including a Catz record in the relay) and the boys came 5th. A strong performance, needless to say. 🏋️‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Men’s football: Despite being up 2-0 by half time, a series of unfortunate events resulted in a final score of 4-3 with Girton 1s barely holding on to the lead. A solid shift by the whole squad with plenty of fresh talent, this season is looking promising🔥⚽️

Mixed Netball: Despite a poor turnout and poor knowledge of the rules, the Catz 'mixed' netball team put up a valiant effort but sadly no avail. 💯

Boys Rugby: Much like the victory of the men in Japan, SCCRUFC had a strong win against CCK over the weekend. While they were unable to defeat Magdalene, the boys in pink are in good shape for the rest of the season. 🏈

Ladies' Netball: Catz ladies netball team had a tough game with only 6 players to take on lots of Pembroke players. Despite this, Catz were able to score a goal in the first quarter thanks to some LIQUID netball! Thankfully, Pembroke lent us a rotation of their players for the remaining game so were not outnumbered, allowing us to score a few more goals. Even better was seeing so many new faces on the team-keep on coming!😎🔥💥

Women's Football: The SCCWAFC team saw some incredibly strong football this weekend, starting the league with a 5-1 win against Pembroke 2nds. Despite heavy winds, rain and a couple of slips; the love for the wheel definitely trumped all with an excellent turnout from the freshers! We really do love to see it.⚽️⚽️

Ladies Badminton: Pembroke had another L in the Badminton where the Catz team won 6 games to 2! An incredible start to the season. 😀

Lacrosse: Despite a 0-0 score, against Corpus/Newnham (although a secret win because they fortfeited), the team saw a strong performance with a 2-0 win against -in the words of the captain-"against one of the ones beginning with p" (Pembroke again/Peterhouse????)
