Six weeks have flown by! ✨

We’re ending the Pembroke Cambridge Summer Programme with this beautiful artwork by Yu Fei, from Peking University, inspired by her time at Pembroke. 🎨

We had the pleasure of having Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe (FHEA, FRSA, FAcSS) for our final plenary lecture of the summer.

Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe is a leading feminist criminologist and former Director of the University of Cambridge Institute of Criminology. A Fellow of Pembroke College for over 30 years, she has published 12 books and hundreds of academic papers. Her research focuses on women and criminal justice, youth justice, community penalties, migration, and trauma.

'Women, Crime and Criminal Justice'
Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe’s lecture explores women’s experiences within the criminal justice system, challenging assumptions about women who offend and whether they should be treated differently from men. It considers women’s needs, effective approaches to rehabilitation, and the growing use of imprisonment worldwide. The lecture also questions whether prison works and what justice should mean in practice.

Library Lawn was the centre of two very different milestones in early August - the last formal halls of our 2026 Pembroke Cambridge Summer Programme, and the first significant eclipse in the UK since 1999.

One saw the College’s architecture bathed in sunlight, the other saw it left eerily dark, but both were a cause for celebration, and demonstrated the sense of community shared by our students, no matter the weather! ☀️✨

Earlier in August, we welcomed Dr Elizabeth George and Dr Prithviraj Chattopadhyay for our second plenary lecture, “The Disposition Dividend”.

The session explored how personality and disposition shape workplace experiences, influencing employee wellbeing, teamwork and organisational success. Employers are increasingly interested in this area because understanding personality can support better recruitment, leadership and team development.

We also explored personality frameworks such as MBTI and the Big Five, which measures traits across five dimensions and is more widely supported by research.

Dr George’s work focuses on organisational behaviour, diversity and how differences between employees shape workplace experiences. Dr Chattopadhyay’s research explores team dynamics, social identity and how workplace relationships influence organisational outcomes.

Hey guys, PAs here 💃✨️

We have had so much fun arranging events for you and look forward to holding more!

Monday: We had a treasure hunt where you had to take photos with famous landmarks all over Cambridge. The winners won tokens which can be redeemed for a scoop at Jack's Gelato.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Punting and Croquet, Cambridge classics that we run weekly.

Thursday: Bracelet making to celebrate friendship day!
