Celebrating 50 years of welcoming students from around the world to study abroad at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge.

15/10/2026

Yesterday, Emily from the University of Cambridge’s International Student Recruitment team spoke to our Semester Programme students about applying for postgraduate study at Cambridge. 🎓

Many students choose to return to Cambridge for further study after taking part in one of our programmes, and we hope the session gave our students some useful insights into the opportunities available to them.

Thank you to Emily for taking the time to speak with our students and share her advice! 💙

Hello, and welcome to International Programmes at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge! ✨

We’ve been welcoming students from around the world to take part in academic programmes and experience Cambridge for 50 years. 🎓

From summer and semester programmes to online research and project-based learning, we create opportunities for students to challenge themselves intellectually, explore new academic interests and learn from leading Cambridge academics.

Founded in 1347, Pembroke is the third-oldest Cambridge college and is situated right in the heart of the city. With centuries of history and a thriving, diverse academic community, it’s a very special place to study!

After last week’s matriculation ceremony, our students lined up with Professor Polly Blakesley, Master of Pembroke College, for a group photograph before heading off to their first Formal Hall 📸

We hope everyone’s Cambridge journey has got off to a great start! Wishing our students all the best for the term ahead 💙

Yesterday, our Semester Programme students gathered in the Outer Parlour for their matriculation ceremony.

Matriculation marks the formal admission of a student as a member of the University of Cambridge and Pembroke College, making it a particularly special moment in their time here. Once matriculated, they are members of Pembroke for life, becoming part of the College's long history.

Congratulations to our students on officially becoming members of the University! 🎓

A very warm welcome to our new Fall Semester Programme students, who arrived at the weekend!

Six weeks have flown by! ✨

We’re ending the Pembroke Cambridge Summer Programme with this beautiful artwork by Yu Fei, from Peking University, inspired by her time at Pembroke. 🎨

From the College crest to PA activities, events, academics and the names of new friends, it captures what makes programme so special.

We hope you’re leaving with more than just academic experience; but lifelong friendships and memories to take home with you. 🌍💙

Thank you for an unforgettable six weeks. We wish you all the very best for the future! 🎓✨️

We had the pleasure of having Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe (FHEA, FRSA, FAcSS) for our final plenary lecture of the summer.

Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe is a leading feminist criminologist and former Director of the University of Cambridge Institute of Criminology. A Fellow of Pembroke College for over 30 years, she has published 12 books and hundreds of academic papers. Her research focuses on women and criminal justice, youth justice, community penalties, migration, and trauma.

'Women, Crime and Criminal Justice'
Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe’s lecture explores women’s experiences within the criminal justice system, challenging assumptions about women who offend and whether they should be treated differently from men. It considers women’s needs, effective approaches to rehabilitation, and the growing use of imprisonment worldwide. The lecture also questions whether prison works and what justice should mean in practice.

Library Lawn was the centre of two very different milestones in early August - the last formal halls of our 2026 Pembroke Cambridge Summer Programme, and the first significant eclipse in the UK since 1999.

One saw the College’s architecture bathed in sunlight, the other saw it left eerily dark, but both were a cause for celebration, and demonstrated the sense of community shared by our students, no matter the weather! ☀️✨

Earlier in August, we welcomed Dr Elizabeth George and Dr Prithviraj Chattopadhyay for our second plenary lecture, “The Disposition Dividend”.

The session explored how personality and disposition shape workplace experiences, influencing employee wellbeing, teamwork and organisational success. Employers are increasingly interested in this area because understanding personality can support better recruitment, leadership and team development.

We also explored personality frameworks such as MBTI and the Big Five, which measures traits across five dimensions and is more widely supported by research.

Dr George’s work focuses on organisational behaviour, diversity and how differences between employees shape workplace experiences. Dr Chattopadhyay’s research explores team dynamics, social identity and how workplace relationships influence organisational outcomes.

A fascinating discussion on the role of personality in creating better workplaces.
