Last night we heard from four of our current Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge students as part of our Postgraduate Talks series, chaired by Senior Tutor Dr. Paul Chirico. Held throughout the year, our evening talks enable students to share their research and upcoming plans while developing all-important skills for public speaking and communication with popular audiences. Last night we heard from;

👩‍🏫👟Victoria Proano Carrasco – MPhil in Latin American Studies – Mud, Concrete, and Shoes in the Ecuadorian Amazon

🇨🇳🎥Natcher Pruett – MPhil in AMES – Why This American Watches Nationalistic Chinese Blockbusters

🏺✏️Hanna Turi – MPhil in Classics – If ri-ja = ra2, then ro2 = ?

Thank you to all who presented and attended - it was a fascinating evening!

Huge congratulations to Fitz Fellow Professor Srinivasan Keshav, Co-PI of the TESSERA project at the University of Cambridge, who has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Royal Society is the one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scientific academies and being elected a Fellow is the highest honour for British scientists. Keshav, the Robert Sansom Professor of Computer Science in the University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology, is one of seven members of the University of Cambridge to be elected a Fellow this year.

“It’s a great honour,” Keshav said. “I am happy that it recognizes the area of sustainability and gives an imprimatur of quality to this area of work.”

Over 90 outstanding researchers from across the world have this year been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. They include pioneers and leaders across a range of scientific fields, from astronomy and cancer research to mathematics and biotechnology.

Last Saturday we were delighted to welcome our Year 10 Young Researchers and their guests to College, Cambridge for their Presentation and Celebration day! It was fantastic to see all of their hard work come to fruition and to join their families in supporting their next steps.

We're particularly grateful for our PhD Candidates who led each of our courses this year - Omar al-Rubaie (Psychiatry), Ha Chae Kyoun (Asian and Middle Eastern Studies), Zack Rauwald (Political Thought), Michael Taplin (Music Composition) Michael Taplin - Composer , and Rhiannon Warren (Anglo Saxon, Norse, and Celtic) , - as well as our Fitz Librarians who supported us by arranging an exhibition and handling session themed around the conservation and preservation of some of our special collections.

The Outreach Team have had a very busy vacation period, hosting around 60 students to our Academic Taster Days! Year 12 students were able to attend a taster lecture or supervision in their chosen subject, before visiting one of the university's many faculties, often including a tour by outreach staff and librarians!

We're very grateful for all supporting staff who got involved, either leading sessions with us or supporting students with their questions.

Expanding Horizons and inspiring STEM Career Pathways 🔬👨‍🔬🏗️

In partnership with MathWorks we are helping young people from Cambridgeshire to explore STEM careers and build real-world skills.

As a result of MathWorks' support, students are gaining confidence, discovering how STEM applies in industry and seeing first-hand the opportunities available to them.

“It made me realise what I’m looking for at university”

A huge thank you to MathWorks for their ongoing support, which is equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to thrive in STEM pathways.
