UCR member Yasmina El Chami has won this year’s Hawksmoor Essay Medal, awarded by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain, for her essay titled "Industrialism, Philanthropy, Architecture: The ‘Total’ Project of American Missionaries in Nineteenth-Century Beirut".

The Society's Hawksmoor Essay Medal is awarded annually to the author of the best essay submitted in competition. As a permanent reminder of the winner's achievement, a bronze medal featuring a relief portrait of Nicholas Hawksmoor based on the bust of the architect by John Cheere is awarded and inscribed with the winner's name and date. This is presented at the Society's Annual Lecture and Awards Ceremony. The winning essay is also considered for publication in the Society's journal, Architectural History. UCR member Anwar Jaber successfully completed all the requirements for her PhD degree at the centre. Her PhD thesis is entitled "The Paradox of Ramallah: An Investigation into Palestine’s Political and National Architecture and Urban Topography Since 1995". The thesis investigates the urban transformation of the Palestinian city of Ramallah focusing on its political and cultural-national sites and positions this transformation within the larger Palestinian struggle for a state with Jerusalem as a capital. Congratulations Dr Jaber!
