BOOK LAUNCH! 📚

The Centre for Statecraft & National Security will host Prof Brendan Simms and Dr Hugo Bromley for the launch of their new book: British Statecraft and the Baltic Sea Region: A Documentary History

Following Britain’s departure from the European Union, and an uncertain security environment across the continent, it is more vital than ever that we understand Britain’s relationship with the different states of Europe in historical context. British Statecraft and the Baltic Sea Region is a study of how the British state understood and acted in the Baltic Sea Region between 1600 and the present day. Combining original archival material with historical analysis, the book explores how the region has played a central role in British debates over territorial integrity and the balance of power, and functions as a starting point for further research.

Join Prof. Brendan Simms and Nicholas Hopton at the Cambridge Alumni Festival to launch our new Mediterranean Programme, exploring Britain's enduring relationship with the region and the challenges and opportunities shaping it today.

Recently, our staff member Dr Lisa Vickers participated in the Manfred Wörner Seminar with the German Bundeswehr. In her cohort was a Petrean who remembered his time at the college fondly, entering Professor Brendan Simms' new book The Return of the Great Powers into the seminar's gift lottery as a token to represent his home country. A NATO staff officer was the recipient of this book. The Centre is glad to see Professor Simms' work uniting Cambridge - past and present - and the broader security field. Dr Vickers also saw the book featured at Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus in Berlin, of which there was only one copy remaining!

Visiting Braniewo and meeting with Deputy Mayor Anna Kapusta were highly rewarding parts of CfG's 2026 Baltic Summer School. Huge thanks to Uniwersytet Gdański and all the contributors to this week's programme of political, historical, and cultural education.

University of Cambridge students were very fortunate to visit the Polish-Russian border during the Centre's 2026 Baltic Summer School at the University of Gdańsk. They found this cultural and political exchange to be extremely rewarding. Many thanks to the Warmia-Masuria Border Guard Division and Uniwersytet Gdański for this educational visit.
