The scale of investment in AI is extraordinary, but turning that investment into meaningful economic value is another matter.

In the latest episode of the Cambridge Executive Business Insights: Rethinking AI podcast, Professor Jaideep Prabhu is joined by Simone Lenzu, Assistant Professor of Economics and Policy at Cambridge Judge Business School, to look at AI through a macroeconomic lens.

Their conversation moves beyond the technology itself to consider where the vast resources flowing into AI are going, and what that means for productivity, investment and the wider economy.

They explore why the productivity gains from major technological shifts can take years to materialise; the opportunity costs of concentrating capital, energy and infrastructure around AI; and why organisations may still be in an experimentation phase rather than one of genuine adoption.

Simone also makes the case for thinking about frugal AI differently: not simply as smaller or cheaper models, but as a question of how scarce resources can be allocated more effectively across the economy.
