How do you go from playing rugby for England π to rowing across the Atlantic π?
For Ollie Phillips (EMBA 2016), it starts with the stories you tell yourself before you even begin. He had never rowed before. He did it anyway.
What carried him through wasn't expertise. It was curiosity, courage, and a willingness to make mistakes. He describes the Atlantic row as the hardest thing he has ever done, not physically, but mentally. His way of coping: break the day into segments, fill them with small tasks, and keep moving.
When the big picture feels overwhelming, shrink the timeframe and focus on the next 30 minutes.
Ollie also reflects on mental health, resilience under pressure, and what the Cambridge Judge Executive MBA gave him when he stepped out of elite sport and started again in business.
