Humans of Girton, Light Blues Captain Edition!!! Laura Bleehen, 6th Year Medic
Laura is this years’ Lights blues captain for Cambridge RUFC, + on Saturday she’ll lead the team as they face O*ford in the Varsity match at Twickenham. Laura also somehow balances that with being a 6th year medic. Her interview for Human’s of Girton helped glean some top tricks for being such an active member of the community…
HOW DID YOU GET INTO RUGBY? WAS IT A UNI THING OR BEFORE?
It was a uni thing! So, my first 3 years I played blues football as the goalkeeper, and then one of my friends on the team started playing rugby for a bit. They were like come along to some of the taster days in my third year and I really enjoyed it… I really enjoyed learning a new sport so I was like yea, I’m gonna change my allegiances and start playing rugby!
WHATS TRAINING BEEN LIKE, ESPECIALLY UP TO THIS GAME?
I mean, I’ve had a lot of experience balancing working and doing sports and I actually find that I can be more productive when I’m busy in some ways! When it comes to rugby we’ve gradually been getting better and better and I’m really excited to go out on that field with my teammates.
LEADING FROM THAT, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT SATURDAY?
Excited! I think that this is one of the best teams that I’ve been a part of in Cambridge and I know there’s so much quality on our team in every position and I’m just so excited to see that come to fruition in Twickenham… let’s hope we run a bit rampant!!!
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR JUGGLING YOUR DEGREE WITH EXTRACURRICULARS AND SOCIETIES SUCH AS RUGBY?
I would say find out really early on into the year every bit of information you possibly can about training schedules and supervisions, and then just schedule your life to the nth degree and you’ll be okay!!!
WHATS YOUR FAV SPOT IN GIRTON?
I really like Woodlands Court- I lived there for 3 years basically so it’s got a sweet spot for me.
DID YOU COME TO SPRING BALL? ###x
I did, yeah! It was really good… one of the best balls I’ve been to in Cambridge and that’s 6 years of balls!!!
We wish Laura and the rest of the team the best of luck for Saturday and hope O*ford get pummelled x
