Rowan, soon to be going into the third year of the Natural Sciences Tripos, has spent most of his summer at King’s, researching coral reefs while enjoying any sunny spots in the College gardens. Rowan is one of this year’s 31 undergraduate researchers taking part in the Summer Research Programmes.

"Coral reefs are one of the most important, yet threatened, ecosystems on Earth. Given the difficulties with studying them, we still do not understand all of their ecological processes.

The project I have been working on aims to use high resolution maps to look at some of the interactions occurring between the corals themselves across varying spatial scales. Do corals compete with each other, and over what distances? Does the arrangement of corals change with different environmental variables, such as depth or light? And how do the interactions occurring between corals depend on their proximity to other species and the habitat they find themselves in?"

Rowan will present his findings alongside the 30 other students who took part in the King's Summer Research Programme at our annual research showcase tomorrow, 17th October. Join us for an eye-opening afternoon!

New wildflower meadows are taking root on Parker’s Piece, with some very special helpers leading the way! 💪

Heavy horses Cosmo and Ron were spotted carrying out preparatory work ahead of transporting 30 bales of green hay from the established meadow in front of King’s College Chapel. Look out for them as they return today from 11am.

This exciting partnership with will create two new native wildflower meadow areas near the University Arms Hotel on Parker’s Piece, helping to boost biodiversity and create beautiful habitats for wildlife. 🌱🦋

We can’t wait to see the result!

Harriet, about to begin her third year at King’s studying English, decided to apply to take part in this year’s Summer Research Programme with a project of her own design.

“I proposed my own independent project, titled ‘Angry, Moody, Symptomatic: Algorithmically-Driven Narratives of the Pre-Menstrual Female Body and their Epistemological Consequences’, which I worked on under the supervision of Dr Amy Gaeta [Murray Edwards College Cambridge]. The project examined narratives circulated through short-form content (specifically Instagram Reels) on the subject of PMS and PMDD. Short-form content is rapidly becoming an essential interface for the dissemination of information online.

Due to the nature of the recommendation algorithm, many young women like myself are presented with content on PMS, the luteal phase (a term which has seen a 250% increase in Google searches over the past year), and wellness trends such as ‘cycle syncing’. My findings were situated against established Western medical narratives and feminist discourse on the pre-menstrual woman, as well as algorithmic ethics examining the algorithms underlying the individual’s feed.

This project has been an incredible opportunity and will go on to form the basis of my MPhil proposal, aligning menstrual health research with algorithmic ethics.”

It's not every day a Fellow celebrates their diamond jubilee, but we are truly delighted to celebrate Professor John Dunn's 60th anniversary of joining the Fellowship of King's College.

John first arrived at King's as undergraduate in 1958, and has gone on to be one of the UK's pre-eminent political theorists. His work spans the historical development of political ideas and the political significance of their practical application to the dynamics of regime persistence and change across the globe since the 20th century, and their prospective implications for our precarious future.

First a member of the Faculty of History, later the Department of Politics (now the Department of Politics and International Studies at University of Cambridge), he has continued to write, research and teach well into his tenure as a Life Fellow at King's. Please join us in congratulating John on this remarkable anniversary!

Tariffs are "supposed" to improve a nation's economy.

However, they frequently do the opposite. And, at the moment, the damage Trump's tariffs are causing is spreading far beyond US borders.

Professor Maurice Obstfeld (KC 1975) breaks down tariffs, how they work, and why they often end up doing the opposite of what those who put them in place claim they will do.

Professor Obstfeld is Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

How monogamous are you?
SPOILERS:
Less than a mouse.

Thanks to Dr Mark Dyble’s paper ‘Human monogamy in mammalian context’, you can find out exactly how you compare to much of the animal kingdom!

Mark’s study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences, looks at reproductive monogamy in eleven mammalian species who are considered to be “socially monogamous”. We rank seventh out of the 11.

The article is open source, so do give it a read - Mark’s work is ace!
