We’re delighted to welcome Yasmin Jahan Nupur to Girton College as the sixth Cavendish Arts Science Fellow!

Based in Bangladesh, Yasmin is a multidisciplinary visual and performance artist whose work brings together textile, embroidery, batik, mixed media and performance, exploring how place, memory, displacement and environmental change shape personal and collective experience.

Thanks to the vision and support of Girton alumna Dr Una Ryan, the Fellowship brings artists into conversation with physicists and other scholars, creating opportunities for new ideas, creative experimentation and fresh perspectives across disciplines. The Fellowship is delivered as a partnership between Cavendish Arts Science, an initiative of the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge.

On this day in 1869, the 'College for Women' opened its doors in Hitchin, beginning a remarkable journey that would help transform access to higher education for women.

Founded by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon, Girton grew from a pioneering vision of women’s access to higher education. From our early beginnings in Hitchin to our home in Cambridge today, Girton has a long history of challenging convention, opening doors and creating opportunities for generations of students.

As we celebrate our heritage and the generations who have shaped Girton, we also look forward to a bold new future, full of possibility, discovery and opportunity.

I loved playing for the GCMS production of Kiss me Kate, and touring the Baltic states with the college choir. 🦠 Could ancient microbes have eaten their way through the fossil record?

Some of Earth’s earliest animals were remarkably soft-bodied, yet they were preserved as fossils. Many later soft-bodied organisms, by contrast, are largely absent from the fossil record.

New research led by Phil Vixsebosxe and Professor Alex Liu, Earth Sciences researcher and Girton Fellow, explores how the rise of collagen-eating microbes could help explain this contrast.

The findings offer a fascinating insight into how microscopic life may have shaped the story of animal evolution.

"I am incredibly grateful to have been awarded the Mary Sparke scholarship. Over the past two years at Girton, I have made countless fond memories and friendships that I know will last me a lifetime. I feel immensely privileged to have been given the opportunity to study a subject I am deeply passionate about in such a beautiful environment, surrounded by such wonderful people. This photo was taken during one of my daily cycles down Huntingdon Road — something I only ever seem to complain about while I’m actually in Cambridge, but which I’ve come to miss during my time back home. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful place to spend my university years, and I am deeply thankful for all the opportunities, experiences, and friendships that Girton has given me."

The first week of the new term has flown by! 🎓

This year marked an exciting milestone as we welcomed our new students to our very first Girton Medics Freshers Programme.

Combining academic and practical skills sessions with plenty of opportunities to get to know one another through a range of fun activities, the programme helped our new medics kick off their University of Cambridge journey, build connections and begin forming a supportive community.
