"Since arriving at Girton, I have been torn between the surprise that I managed to get here at all and the excitement that comes along with doing so. I feel eternally grateful for the opportunities presented to me and the people in my life who encouraged me to chase them. Being at Girton is nothing short of a privilege wrapped within a miracle; to be able to have my passion for literature fostered through such excellent teaching and valuable guidance is still so unbelievable to me. To be awarded this prize does more than validate - it becomes a milestone in my academic time here like so many before me and with so many to follow. Thank you always to Girton and everyone who makes it special."

🎉 Congratulations to Bay Thompson on receiving the Angela Dunn-Gardner Scholarship and Eileen Alexander Prize in recognition of exceptional work in English at Girton College, University of Cambridge!

"My year at Girton has been a completely transformative experience. Part III Physics at Cambridge is a rigorous and competitive course, and it has been privilege to navigate the academic challenge with friends from every corner of the world and every academic discipline. Girton has showed me how to balance intense academic effort with cultivating hobbies and deep, lifelong friendships, giving me the space to be fully myself. Receiving the M.T. Meyer Achievement Scholarship is a deeply meaningful honor, and my gratitude to the college has inspired me to serve as MCR President next year to help foster that same supportive community for others."

🎉 Congratulations to Lara Suárez García on receiving the M. T. Meyer Taught Masters Achievement Scholarship in recognition of excellent work in Physics at Girton College, University of Cambridge!

Exactly 120 years ago, Hertha Ayrton became the first and only woman in the 20th century to receive the Royal Society’s prestigious Hughes Medal.

A former Girton student, Hertha was an electrical engineer, mathematician, physicist, inventor and suffrage campaigner and while at Girton, she even founded the College’s own Fire Brigade.

Join experts at the Whipple Museum of the History of Science and cast members of "The Cambridge First All-Ladies Fire Brigade" musical to find out more about Hertha and other pioneering women around her.

The day will feature interactive family talks, an illustrated lecture by Dr Patricia Fara, and two performances of songs from musical, featuring Girton graduate Felix Elliott.

📍 Whipple Museum of the History of Science, Free School Lane
📅 Saturday 12 September, 10am–5pm
🎟️ Free but performances and talks have limited capacity, so arrive early!

The event has also been featured by BBC News 👇
Cambridge Festival

The musical features five pioneering 19th Century women scientists who studied at Cambridge.

"I am, of course, hugely grateful and honoured to have received the Angela Dunn-Gardner Scholarship. This picture was taken on the night of our Marriage Formal in Easter Term of 2025, amidst revision and portfolio composition, in the beautiful Girton Orchard. Despite looming exams and deadlines, we came together to commemorate the impending end of our first year and to celebrate our precious and still relatively newfound friendships. The Girton culture is one of joy, continually reaffirming to me the absolute compatibility of academic dedication with celebration. Singing with The Chapel Choir of Girton College, Cambridge - UK at a multitude of celebratory college events as well as weekly services has only served to reinforce this happy sentiment."

🎉 Congratulations to Freya S. on receiving the Angela Dunn-Gardner Scholarship in recognition of exceptional work in English at Girton College, University of Cambridge!

“I’m really grateful and a little surprised to receive this scholarship! My first year at Girton has been full of interesting conversations, late nights in the library, and plenty of moments that have challenged the way I think. One of the things I love most about studying Geography is that it connects so many different perspectives, whether that’s climate change, cities, geopolitics, or human behaviour, so there’s always something new to be curious about. I’m very thankful to the Fellows, supervisors, and friends at Girton who have made my first year such an enjoyable one. Receiving this award is a lovely encouragement, and I’m excited to see where the next two years take me.”

🎉 Congratulations to Yifei W. on receiving the Lady Rosalind Carlisle Scholarship in recognition of outstanding work in Geography at Girton College, University of Cambridge!

"There is something genuinely special about the community at Girton, and from my first day I have felt so welcomed by both the students and staff here. My time at Girton has been heavily intertwined with Girton College Boat Club, and I have made some of my fondest memories and closest friendships whilst rowing for Girton. I am incredibly grateful to be awarded the May Smithells Prize in recognition of my academic achievement, and I believe it is a testament to the quality of academic support and pastoral care that Girton provides its students. As I enter my final year studying Part III Mathematics, I am excited to continue my academic journey at Girton and will endeavour to make the most of the time I have left here."

🎉 Congratulations to Thomas M. on receiving the M. T. Meyer Scholarship and May Smithells Prize in recognition of excellent work in Mathematics at Girton College, University of Cambridge!
