We were delighted to bring together Fellows, alumni and students for Girton’s inaugural Engineers’ Event - an inspiring day of ideas, connection and celebration ✨

The symposium showcased the breadth and impact of Girton engineers across sectors and continents. From climate repair and greenhouse gas removal to sustainable energy transitions in East Africa, and from Formula One to sustainable infrastructure earthworks, speakers highlighted engineering’s pivotal role in tackling today's challenges.

We also heard about cutting-edge developments in Cambridge engineering from the Head of the Department of Engineering, Professor Colm Durkin, as well as the decarbonisation plans of our own historic College estate - a reminder that transformation begins at home.

The evening concluded with a thought-provoking after-dinner address from Professor Mark Spearing (1983), reflecting on a career spanning academia, industry and innovation, and the enduring value of a Girton engineering education.

šŸ’” A lively and thought-provoking occasion, full of bold ideas, real-world impact, and a shared commitment to shaping a more sustainable future.

Have you ever wondered why T. rex had tiny arms? šŸ¦–

Research co-authored by Girton Fellow Dr Elizabeth Steell has found that smaller arms in several carnivorous dinosaur groups were closely linked to the development of large, powerful skulls.

On Friday, we had a fantastic Girton Jazz workshop led by Alex Garnett with James Pearson šŸŽ·šŸŽ¹

Students had the chance to learn, listen, and get hands-on guidance from incredible musicians. Lots of great energy in the room and plenty of inspiration to take away.

Huge thanks to both for coming in and sharing your time with us before the concert!
