Farewell to Leti Garcia, manager of Café ‘84, who leaves Pembroke today, to return home to Valencia!

Before she left, we asked Leti to show us how she makes that Spanish classic, an iced Café Bombón.🧋

Thank you for everything, Leti and best wishes for whatever comes next. ❤️

We were delighted that the Mill Lane development won four(!) RIBA East Awards last week:

▪️ 2026 UK RIBA East Award
▪️ 2026 UK RIBA East Building of the Year
▪️ 2026 UK RIBA East Project Architect of the Year: Hannah Constantine
▪️ 2026 UK RIBA East Conservation Award

The jury commended the team for its intelligent, fearless handling of a complex brief, the skill and tenacity of the project architect, and the way that social and environmental values are embedded.

This is very well-deserved recognition for Hannah and the rest of the team at Haworth Tompkins, as well as the many other contractors and individuals whose vision, creativity, ingenuity and professionalism brought such a complex project to fruition. Congratulations to you all!

The Mill Lane development (now known as the Dolby Quarter) will now proceed to judging at RIBA's National Awards, with results announced on 17 July.

Last Friday was a day of celebration as 17 students were awarded their PhD, MPhil, EMBA, and MFin degrees. 🎓🎉

It's always wonderful to watch students celebrate their achievements with their families after so much hard work.

Congratulations to everyone who received their degree, and best wishes for your future endeavours!

Students found relief from both the heat and impending exams at the Master’s stress-busting smoothie session this morning. 🍓🫐

It was a chance for students to chat and chill out in a laid-back environment, berry smoothie in hand.

Naturally, the Master’s dogs Maisie and Maple (not pictured) thought the gathering was for them and delightedly accepted all the affection the students willing lavished on them!

Is it possible to save hedgehogs with the help of satellites and AI? 🛰️🦔

Pembroke Fellow and Professor of Planetary Computing, Anil Madhavapeddy and Academic Associate, Dr Sadiq Jaffer certainly think so.

They have helped develop a powerful new open-source AI tool called TESSERA, which stacks and analyses thousands of detailed satellite images from the EU’s Copernicus satellites to produce highly detailed maps of Earth.

Collaborating with the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, TESSERA has helped identify and map the habitats in which hedgehogs thrive across the UK, such as hedgerows and bramble patches.

The status of hedgehogs in the UK is listed as Vulnerable on the Red List of British mammals. While urban hedgehogs are doing well, their numbers in rural areas are estimated to have fallen by up to 75% since 2000, as their habitats have shrunk and become severely fragmented. This leaves them susceptible to predators and traffic as they move from one suitable piece of land with cover to another.

Anil and Sadiq hope that TESSERA can help guide and support conservationists' efforts to protect hedgehogs and their habitats, as well as those of many other animals worldwide.

Yesterday, Michael Pritchard (Corporate Partnership Programme Senior Coordinator) hosted a charity bake sale in the Hall, which raised £520 for Cambridge RapeCrisis Centre (CRCC).

As well as organising the bake sale, Michael has run the 2026 Cambridge Half Marathon and last week’s London Marathon, clocking in at 4:07:32. His efforts have raised over £3,000 for CRCC. Well done, Michael!

Michael made his well-known focaccia, while colleagues contributed a tempting array of cakes, brownies, cookies, tray bakes and even foot-shaped cheese straws. Kate, his line manager, added a playful touch by baking Michael-themed biscuits, decorated with running kits and oversized biscuit moustaches.

Not a crumb went to waste, as leftovers were shared with students in N7, who were busy studying for their exams.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the bake sale such a success!

Read a round-up of the sporting action in Lent Term, which saw strong involvement across the College community in the Pembroke Mile, the Cambridge Half Marathon and the Cambridge to Oxford bike ride, a very good performance by Pembroke College Boat Club in the Lent Bumps, and Pembroke students representing the University across rowing, rugby, football, lacrosse, dancesport, Eton fives, volleyball and basketball.

What are we looking forward to in the new term?

▪️Can Newbroke defend their football Cuppers' title on 10th May?
▪️Can Purton beat St John's this Saturday to reach the men's rugby Cuppers final?
▪️Can W1 carry their strong form into the May Bumps?
▪️More Varsity action.

And, of course, the start of Easter Term means the sound of the not-so-gentle thwacking of croquet balls returns to Pembroke…

On Sunday, a dedicated team of Pembroke Fellows and students took on one final challenge to push us over the finish line. Cycling 85 miles from Oxford to Cambridge, their mission was to bolster our fundraising efforts to support Pembroke’s next CARA scholar.

We are thrilled to share that the group raised £1,433.25, taking our final Giving Day total to a staggering £128,468.

James Gardom, Pembroke’s Dean and Chaplain, shared his highlights from the road: "This was a great group to cycle with. Fast, working well together, and bowling along at an average of 13.5 mph. No punctures, no mechanical failures, and everyone cycled up every hill—including a strikingly steep alternative to Brill Hill, specially found for us by Professor Carl Henrik Ek! It was perfect cycling weather and a glorious day all round."

This ride was the perfect conclusion to a campaign that will enable Pembroke to offer a place of sanctuary and support for a displaced academic and their family.

A massive thank you to our riders: Abhiraj, Carl, Thea, Alexander, James, Adam, and Isobel (pictured L-R), and to every single person who sponsored them.
