The first Engagement Project of this week is the one of Jules Jones.

She focused on the history of perfumes within ancient Greece and Rome, concluding with a modern recreation of an ancient Greek perfume based on a recipe from Dioscorides’ ‘On Medical Material’.

The next creative Engagement Project in the series will be by Tabitha Dobson.

For this project, she explored how shadows were used to enhance the visual experience of ancient Greek religious architecture, focusing on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, the Pelopeion, the Temple of Apollo at Bassae, and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. Drawing on accounts by Pausanias and Vitruvius, she analysed axis orientation, architectural form, and cult practice, presenting their findings through an illustrated sketchbook and a scaled model of the Temple of Hera, lit to replicate the solar positioning of 430 BCE.

We are pleased to share with you some of the creations of our students involved in the creative path of their Engagement Project.

Today we look at the work of Kate Hobbs. Her project is an exploration of mythological women through the medium of fashion. Drawing inspiration from the original texts, she designed an outfit for Cassandra, Athena, Aphrodite, and Penelope to provide a way for people to view them and form their own interpretations of the characters based on the specific design choices. She wanted to look into reception studies in fashion and bring classics into a sphere of influence that could reach many different people.
