Computer scientists don't touch grass? Our resident lecturer, Sergey Ovchinnik, showed you can do more than that! Utilising the easy campus connection to the Crab and Winkle way, you can walk all the way to Whitstable in just under 2 hours! We're proud to present Sergey's quest to complete this walk from our School and back, just to go touch the sea!

Meet our School of Computing supported student societies! All student-led, full of social and academic events throughout the entire year at the University of Kent!

compSocKent - University of Kent’s official Computing Society. Running a variety of weekly social events and programming sessions, as well as extracurricular bootcamps and hackathons teaching you new skills outside of your degree. This society also organises and runs KentHackIt, a large over the weekend hackathon event with industrial sponsors.

TinkerSoc - The maker society of Kent. Utilising our hackspace facility on Wednesday nights, they make use of the 3D printers, soldering stations, vinyl cutting, and the expertise of our technicians to craft and create whatever you want! Join the learning sessions to pick up a new skill or just hang out while working on your own projects!

KMCS3 - The Cyber Security Society, running regular academic events such as workshops and capture the flag events. They also compete in national cyber security competitions such as Cyber Hack.

AI Society - A society focused on the area of Artificial Intelligence. As well as social events, they run AI specific bootcamps teaching you new skills in the field and guest lectures from industrial specialists.

Critical Hit - A public event, sponsored by compSocKent, running gaming events every Sunday. Each event features its famous Smash Bros. Tournament as well as a variety of other game setups to hop on with friends and meet new people. They also run the annual regional tournament series, Melody, which features a selection of fighting game brackets and money prize pool.

We interviewed a collection of young people participating in the CyberFirst Advanced Programme by QinetiQ, here at the School of Computing. They share their favourite tools and experiences during the event, and how they will make use of these skills in the future.

We are proud to have been a part of this event and it is one of the many ways we help support wider Computing education.

As part of your degree, much like whatever industry you go into, you’ll take part in group work scattered throughout.

Whether this is group design work, paired programming or your final year group software engineering project, there are many ways in which you can do this.
For many of the projects, there are systems in place for if there are concerns with how your group work is going, whether this be a reporting system, being able to talk directly to your lecturer or one of the the Senior Tutor team. On larger projects, such as the Final Year Group Project (work occurs as a group but marks are assigned individually), you have your own project supervisor who is there to help guide you through the project and point you in the right direction when things might have hit a dead end.

No matter what kind of project you’re doing, there are plenty of spaces to meet with your group to get the work done. Within Kennedy itself, there are plenty of spaces for groups to gather. If those are all full, then there are many study hubs around Campus which have the facilities for group or individual work including spaces with presentation screens to work on projects together. If you’d like something more dedicated and secluded, then you can book out one of the group study spaces in the Templeman Library which gives you a dedicated room to hold meetings, run through presentations or hash out ideas. Go to https://student.kent.ac.uk/studies/library/study-spaces to find out more about all of these.

However, group work isn’t for everyone and we have facilities in place to account for that... (Part 2 of this post coming on Tuesday!)
