Researchers awarded £2.2m to advance robotics for eye surgery 👀

Pleased to share that Professor Adrian Podoleanu, Dr Michael Hughes and Dr Manuel Marques from our School of Natural Sciences are part of a collaborative research team who have been awarded £2.2 million by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) to develop a flexible surgical robot for delivering vision-restoring therapies into the eye.

Retinal vascular diseases are conditions that affect the blood vessels of the retina, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). These conditions affect more than 200 million people worldwide and are a leading cause of blindness. Current treatments are costly and only slow disease progression, so there is a need for therapies that restore as well as preserve vision.

Costa Rica field trip diaries 🇨🇷 📸

Our third year BSc Ecology and Conservation students recently ventured to the forests and beaches of Costa Rica to learn more about survey skills used in tropical environments, gain first-hand experience of tropical forest ecology, and learn about efforts to protect endangered marine turtles.

From exploring renowned rainforests and turtle-nesting beaches to discovering incredible wildlife, the trip offered a wealth of opportunities for hands-on learning. Students also took part in a range of academic activities focused on land-use change, ecosystem functioning and key conservation challenges.

And judging by the photos, it looks like the group had an unforgettable experience!

From studying BSc Sport Therapy and Rehabilitation at Kent to the Arsenal FC Academy! ⚽️

That’s the story for recent Kent graduate Chloe, who gained hands-on experience through our student-led clinic and a 44-week placement at Charlton Athletic FC, building the confidence and practical skills to take the next step in her career.

Talking about her experience at Kent, Chloe said: “I wanted a course that combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical experience. From the student-led clinic to my placement, I saw a huge growth in my confidence and practical skills during my time at Kent.”

Now, Chloe is taking that experience into professional football as a Sports Therapist with the Arsenal FC Academy.

She said: “Working with Charlton was such an amazing experience. I felt welcomed and part of the team throughout all four of my rotations. It helped me gain valuable experience in football, which played a big part in helping me secure my role at the Arsenal FC Academy, where I’ll be working as a casual Sports Therapist with the 9–16s.”

Congratulations to Professor Dominic Abrams OBE, who has been recognised with a senior career award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) – the world’s largest organisation of personality and social psychologists and Division 8 of the American Psychological Association.

The award, titled the Donald T. Campbell award, recognises significant scholarly achievement and consistent research excellence carried out over a recipient’s career in social psychology.
