Welsh Plastic Surgery Conference 2023

Saturday saw the inaugural Welsh Plastic Surgery Conference, where delegates gathered to celebrate all things Plastic Surgery in the Welsh capital.

A hugely successful day saw a wide range of speakers from all sub-specialities deliver fascinating lectures & sponsors offering facilities for us to support a variety of interactive workshops.

We would like to thank all our guests for coming along, all the speakers for their time and insights, and all of our sponsors to make this event possible!

Welsh Plastic Surgery conference speaker - Mr Nick Wilson-Jones

Mr Nicholas Wilson Jones trained in Wales, London and Vancouver prior to being appointed as consultant paediatric plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery in Swansea in 2008. He is presently lead clinician for paediatric plastic surgery in Wales, consulting in Swansea, Cardiff, Newport and Carmarthen.
He has an interest in many areas within paediatric plastic surgery including hypospadias, vascular anomalies and spina bifida. Nick regularly lectures nationally and internationally and has published widely on many areas within his field. He is the current Hypospadias SIAG chair.
Nick has a keen interest in medical education locally as the Welsh Plastic Surgery Speciality Training Committee chair and as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School but also nationally as Vice Chair of the Speciality Advisory Committee and lead for national selection, also enjoying being an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Plastic Surgery.

Dean Boyce is the Clinical Director of the Welsh Centre for Plastic Surgery & Burns. He is President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and a Council member of the British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, He has written many papers and book chapters and is Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons. He has a keen interest in teaching and research and as Chair of Education of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons set up the BAPRAS Medical Student Series of Webinars during the pandemic to aid medical student teaching.

Welsh Plastic Surgery conference speaker - Mr Richard Karoo

Mr Richard Karoo FRCS(Plast) is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon who consults in Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.
Having worked extensively throughout the United Kingdom his specialist registrar training was based in Leeds. Richard subsequently secured the International Microsurgical Fellowship at The Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia, then the Reconstructive Breast Surgery fellowship at St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford. To complement his experience, completed his Cosmetic Surgery & Aesthetic Fellowship at the world-renowned London Clinic, Harley Street, London.
Richard undertook his scientific research at the Plastic Surgery & Burns Research Unit, Bradford, UK, investigating wound healing models for the production of biological Skin Substitutes. He has co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, presented at numerous national and international meetings.
In Mr Richard Karoo’s NHS Practice, he is the Clinical Lead for Plastic Reconstructive Head and Neck Surgery at the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery. In addition to his aesthetic practice, he performs a wide range of reconstructive microsurgical plastic surgery operations.
Key areas of aesthetic surgery interest include surgical facial rejuvenation, face lifting, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and non-surgical facial procedures, with expertise in cosmetic breast surgery with augmentation, uplifting and reductions.
Richard brings an extensive cosmetic surgery experience gained both in the UK and abroad to his own private cosmetic surgery clinic based in Cardiff and operates in South Wales’ private hospitals.

Welsh Plastic Surgery conference speaker - Mr Nick Marsden

Nick completed his medical training and a BSc in Anatomy at Cardiff University, graduating in 2007. He went on to complete his Foundation and Core surgical training rotations across South Wales, and also spent a year as an anatomy demonstrator at Brighton & Sussex Medical School. In 2013 he started his National Training Number in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, at The Welsh Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery, Morriston Hospital, Swansea. During his training, he was awarded a National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR) funded Clinical Research Fellow position, which lead to him being awarded an M.D from Swansea University. Nick was awarded his FRCS Plast in 2018, and has gone on to work as a Microsurgical Reconstructive fellow in some of the most renowned centres in Melbourne, Australia, as well as being the senior microsurgery fellow specialising in lower limb reconstruction in Bristol, UK. Nick has presented at multiple national and international meetings and published widely in peer reviewed journals in the field of plastic surgery. Nick is a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon working at part of the South Wales Major Trauma Network orthoplastic service between the Welsh Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery, Swansea, and the Major Trauma Centre in Cardiff. He specialises in microsurgical lower limb reconstruction.

Welsh Plastic Surgery conference speaker - Miss Sophie Pope-Jones

Sophie Pope-Jones qualified from Oxford University and UMDS in London in 1994 and 1997 respectively. She did her basic surgical training in Norwich, before doing research in the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead and then Salisbury District Hospital in Telemedicine and Wound healing with VAC therapy. Her higher surgical training in Plastic surgery was undertaken initially in Oxford before transferring to Wales. Much of her higher surgical training was spent as a flexible trainee. She undertook a fellowship in Major trauma and microsurgery in Southampton before starting as a consultant in 2019 at Morriston Hospital in Burns and Reconstructive Plastic surgery specialising in Burns, Major trauma and Malignant melanoma. She is currently the Plastic surgical lead for Major trauma across South Wales. She has 4 children.

Welsh Plastic Surgery conference speaker - Mr Thomas Dobbs

Tom is a plastic surgery registrar and clinical academic lecturer at Swansea University. He studied medicine at Oxford University, graduating with a 1st Class and distinction, before undertaking an academic foundation programme and core surgical training in the Oxford deanery. He has undertaken his higher surgical training as part of the Welsh Clinical Academic Training (WCAT) programme. His PhD was awarded in 2020 for a thesis on patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in facial skin cancer. His research continues in the fields of PROMs, skin cancer and novel technologies for analysing large and routinely collected datasets. His clinical interests focus on head and neck and skin cancer, taking him back to Oxford next year for a senior head and neck cancer fellowship.
