We are delighted to celebrate three outstanding achievements in the 2026 Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, which attracted over 27,000 students from across the UK.

🥇 Cyrus was named Wales Winner for his Mandarin translation.

🥇 Veronica was named Wales Winner for her Italian translation (GCSE).

👏 Elle received a Commendation for her French translation.

A fantastic achievement for all three students, showcasing their exceptional linguistic skills and attention to detail. 🇨🇳🇮🇹🇫🇷

There was a real buzz in the air in Cardiff Bay yesterday, with two rather special visitors! 👑👑

Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited the Senedd for the Ceremonial Opening of the Seventh Senedd.

We were right at the heart of the action, with the royal convoy driving on the very same road that connects our school with our boarding house. It’s not every day a royal occasion happens right on your doorstep!

It was also lovely to see the Royal Welsh mascot Lance Corporal Shekin VI, a royally impressive goat 🐐

Cardiff Sixth Form College holds its first open day at the new Cardiff Bay Campus

Cardiff Sixth Form College welcomed over 100 families and prospective students to its Open Day on Saturday 10 October 2026, marking the first time the event had been held at the College’s new Cardiff Bay campus.

The event began with introductions in the purpose-built auditorium on the top floor of the new school building. Principal Tom Arrand welcomed visitors and introduced the College, highlighting the opportunities available to students at CSFC. Deputy Head Student Ava Grace then shared her personal experiences, offering families an insight into student life at the College and the academic and extracurricular opportunities available.

Following the introductions, families were invited to explore the new campus on guided tours, discovering the College’s modern learning facilities and purpose-built spaces. Visitors also had the opportunity to speak directly with subject teachers in the classrooms and laboratories, learning more about the curriculum, teaching approach and facilities available across different subjects.

The Open Day provided an opportunity for prospective students and their families to experience the new Cardiff Bay campus firsthand, meet members of the College community and gain a better understanding of what it is like to study at Cardiff Sixth Form College.

Netball Fixture Success!
A fantastic netball fixture over the weekend against St Mike’s! An exciting match saw CSFC secure a brilliant 21–7 victory.
There was excellent teamwork and great play across the court from everyone involved. A huge thank you to St Mike’s for making the journey. We look forward to the next fixture! 👏

Cardiff Sixth Form College’s Sports Day 2026 was the first major event of the new school year and the biggest Sports Day we have ever held!
It was also the first opportunity for students to earn valuable House Cup points, with our three new Houses – Campbell, Novello and Bevan – taking part in their very first House event.
The day was filled with fun, fierce competition and plenty of House spirit. A huge congratulations to Seacole House, who took the Sports Day title this year! 🏆
Well done to all our students who competed, supported their Houses and gave their best throughout the day. While there could only be one winning House, it was fantastic to see everyone enjoying such a memorable start to the new school year.
A big thank you to all our staff for their hard work in organising and supporting the event.
The House Cup competition is officially underway – and there’s plenty more to come!

Ariana is on a mission to save the bees!

Former student, Ariana H, is currently studying Biochemistry at St Hilda's College, Oxford, where she is the wet lab co-lead of NECTAR, Oxford's 2026 iGEM team. The team is developing a dsRNA therapy to protect honeybees from the Varroa mite and will present this work in Paris in November.

Ariana writes:

“Varroa mites are one of the biggest threats facing honeybees, they are responsible for 60% of colony losses in the US and are a growing concern in the UK. These mites, like fleas or ticks, are parasites that cling to bees and feed on them, spreading viruses as they go. If left untreated, they can cause entire colonies with tens of thousands of bees each, to collapse.

“Current treatments are either chemical-based or slow-acting. Mites are becoming resistant to the chemical treatments, and the slower options leave the mites free to wreak havoc on the hive during the delay period.

“This is where my team comes in. I'm part of NECTAR, Oxford's 2026 team in iGEM. iGEM is the world's largest international synthetic biology competition, giving university students a chance to tackle real issues using bioscience. This year, we are designing a dsRNA (double-stranded RNA) therapy that stops Varroa mites from making the proteins they need to survive. Our aim is to produce a faster-acting, safer alternative to current treatments in order to save the bees.

“Every living organism has a set of internal instructions, called genes, which tell the body how to build the proteins it needs to survive. dsRNA works by silencing specific genes. We have designed our therapy to silence genes that mites cannot live without, so when the mites take in our therapy, they can no longer make those proteins and should die before they can harm the bees.

“Since the dsRNA matches only the mite's genes, it is designed to leave bees, other insects and humans unaffected.

“As wet lab co-lead, I'm in charge of synthesising the therapy and making sure our experiments run smoothly. In November, we're heading to Paris to present our research alongside over 500 student-led teams from around the world.

“None of this would have been possible without Cardiff Sixth Form College (CSFC). When I mentioned wanting to apply to Oxford, my teachers encouraged and supported me every step of the way, showing me that nothing was out of reach. That belief gave me the confidence to apply, and now to help lead NECTAR.

“CSFC was a place where I could share my ideas freely. Being encouraged to speak up and think critically about what I was learning is exactly what prepared me for research. CSFC also taught me how to work as part of a team, something I rely on every day with NECTAR.

“To current students - if there's something you want to go for, say it out loud. The people at CSFC will help you get there!”

Six students from Cardiff College travelled to St Paul's Girls School, London to participate in their Women's Schools Debate Competition. Giselle, our Debate President this year and Ava our Vice President were invited to join the team of judges at this event, with Giselle also being selected on the day to judge the Silver Finals.

Siying, Wenli, (AS students) and Grace and Elle (GCSE students) took part in three challenging debate rounds. Our GCSE students are to be congratulated on making it to the Novice finals where they came runners up debating the topic: 'This House Believes esports should be included in the Olympics'.

Congratulations to Seamus on receiving an Honourable Mention in the French Maths Olympiad Competition! 🎉

The competition involved two rounds of complex mathematical problems, all completed through the medium of French- an impressive challenge combining mathematical reasoning with advanced language skills.
