Cardiff Student Yuxuan Wu Celebrates A-Level Success and Oxford Law Place

Huge congratulations to Cardiff Sixth Form College student Yuxuan Wu, who is celebrating outstanding A-Level results: A* in English Literature, History, Mathematics and Physics, plus an A* in his EPQ.
Yuxuan, who studied at the College on a scholarship, has secured his place to study Law at Jesus College, Oxford.
His passion for law was sparked by a Cardiff University careers event, and he has since developed an impressive record in debating, law and ethics. As a committee member of the College Debating Society and Vice President of the Law Society, Yuxuan has organised debates, mentored younger students and supported Mock Trial teams.
His debating achievements include reaching the finals of the Oxford and Cambridge University Debate Competitions, becoming a Silver Finalist at Warwick University and competing in the ESU Mace. He also helped his team win the South Wales round of the Ethics Cup before progressing to the national finals at the University of St Andrews.
Beyond the classroom, Yuxuan has supported debating outreach programmes for schools across Wales, represented Wales internationally in chess, and performs as a Grade 8 clarinet and piano player with the Cardiff and Vale Youth Orchestra.

Principal Tom Arrand said:
“Yuxuan is talented on many levels, as a keen debater, chess player and musician, and his analytical skills are superb. He is keen to make a difference in society through law and explores questions of justice and ethics. I am looking forward to hearing about his next chapter.”

Musician, Black Belt and Future Economist Kushi Shetty Celebrates A-Level Success

Cardiff Sixth Form College student Kushi Shetty is celebrating an outstanding set of A-Level results, achieving four A*s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics and Psychology and securing her place at Imperial College London to study Economics, Finance and Data Science.

A scholarship student, Kushi has made an exceptional contribution to College life beyond the classroom. An accomplished violinist, she has achieved ARSM Diploma level, performs with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and Cardiff and Vale Youth Orchestra, and helped transform the College orchestra into a student-led organisation. The orchestra, involving around 30 students, has performed at major College events, while Kushi has also helped establish ensembles that perform in local care homes.

A musical highlight came when she performed at the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with the South-East Wales Youth Orchestra.
Kushi has also earned a black belt in karate, developed her leadership skills as Deputy Head Student, and helped organise initiatives including the College TEDx event, yearbook and Outreach for Music project. Her achievements were recognised with the Student of the Year award, and she was runner-up in the ISA Lexden Prize. Her passion for economics and public policy has been strengthened through work experience with Barclays Corporate Finance and Penguin Wealth, and she hopes to pursue a career in macroeconomic policy, with a particular interest in the impact of artificial intelligence on finance.
Outside College, Kushi volunteers at the Indian Heritage Centre in Cardiff, is an accomplished Indian Classical dancer and has qualified twice for the Oxford University Debating Finals.
Cardiff Sixth Form Principal Tom Arrand praised Kushi as an exceptional musician and “real team player”, highlighting her achievements in music, volunteering, debating and leadership.

As she heads to Imperial College London, Kushi leaves Cardiff Sixth Form College having combined academic excellence with an extraordinary commitment to music, leadership, sport and community.

Cardiff Sixth Form College student Amber Osborne is celebrating her A-Level results after securing a place to study Medicine at the University of Exeter. A scholarship student, Amber achieved an A* in Biology, As in Chemistry, Mathematics and Psychology, plus an A* in her EPQ.

Her academic curiosity was showcased through her EPQ, which explored whether Ozempic is the most adequate treatment for Type 2 Diabetes. Amber investigated its effectiveness alongside issues including cost, accessibility, supply shortages and alternative treatments, concluding that while it may be highly effective, practical challenges can limit its suitability for patients.

Amber’s passion for medicine has also been shaped by work experience at the University Hospital of Wales, where she observed specialist dermatology and neurosurgical procedures. She hopes to eventually specialise in dermatology, with a particular interest in the links between physical and mental wellbeing.

Alongside her studies, Amber has demonstrated outstanding leadership and community involvement. As Vice President of the College Debate Society, she helped her team win the Welsh round of the Ethics Cup before finishing runners-up nationally, while also achieving success in Cambridge debating competitions. She has led outreach workshops introducing debating to students in schools across Wales and serves as Vice President of the Medical Ethics Society.

Amber has also been a House Captain, performed in College productions and choirs, and contributed to innovative medical research, helping develop a wearable smart-glasses concept to identify flare-ups associated with Sjögren’s Syndrome.

Her commitment to others extends beyond College through volunteering with Age Cymru, supporting children with disabilities and working part-time alongside her studies. She describes securing her job after around 40 applications as an important lesson in resilience.

Principal Tom Arrand praised Amber’s determination, describing her as an enquiring, warm and highly communicative student who has worked exceptionally hard to achieve her ambition of becoming a doctor.

Cardiff Sixth Form College student Aleksei (Alex) Medvedev is celebrating outstanding A-Level results, achieving four A*s and an A in his EPQ and securing his place to study Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Alex’s passion for science extends well beyond the classroom. Over the past two years, he has worked with fellow student Vitaly to develop a non-invasive Alzheimer’s treatment app inspired by research into 40Hz sensory stimulation. The project has attracted interest from Imperial College Health Partners and led to discussions with researchers at King’s College London and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While the app is publicly available, it has not yet undergone clinical testing.

Alex has also built an impressive research portfolio, including cognitive neuroscience research at the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience in Moscow, where he used EEG to investigate attention during listening. He is preparing the findings for publication and has already published research into plant biology in the Russian Journal of Biological Invasions.
Alongside his research, Alex completed a neuroscience internship with EG Many Labs, serves as a college prefect, helped organise Cardiff Sixth Form College’s TEDx programme and volunteers every Sunday teaching STEM subjects to local school pupils at Grange Pavilion.
Outside academia, Alex is a high-level volleyball player, representing Wales internationally and competing semi-professionally in the National Volleyball League Division Two.
At Cambridge, Alex hopes to explore the intersection of physics, biology and neuroscience, with particular interests in biophysics and brain-computer interfaces. He is keen to contribute to research that advances understanding of the brain and ultimately improves people's lives.
