Congratulations to the Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales for achieving Silver Accreditation through the Royal College of Emergency Medicine's GreenED programme. 💚

The award, announced on Friday, recognises the team's commitment to reducing the department's environmental impact while prioritising patient care. The GreenED team (pictured) have led on the introduction of a range of practical changes that promote greener healthcare and act for the future. The changes include better waste management, less dependence on intravenous medication when appropriate, transitioning from Entonox to the more environmentally friendly Penthrox for pain management, reducing unnecessary glove use and switching to recycled printer paper.

Well done to the team for all the great work they have achieved. Now onto gold! 👏

On 28 August, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board was asked by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (NWJCC) to pause referrals for gender affirming surgery and scheduled surgeries through the Welsh Gender Service while an independent clinical review is undertaken.

Since then, we have heard from patients, families, clinicians and partner organisations who are seeking greater clarity about what the pause means, how long it may last and what it means for ongoing care. We understand this period of uncertainty is worrying for many people, and we are committed to providing clear, factual and timely information about what this means and the support available.

The decision was made following a meeting of the NWJCC Quality, Safety and Outcomes Committee on 24 August 2026, where the service was escalated to Level 3.

Level 3 escalation is a formal NHS improvement and assurance process, indicating that concerns have been identified which require increased oversight, monitoring and improvement action.

At this stage, the pause applies specifically to the surgical pathway within the Welsh Gender Service, and other parts of the service continue to operate as normal. Patients with scheduled appointments with the Welsh Gender Service should continue to attend unless they are contacted directly and advised otherwise.

We recognise that this announcement is concerning for patients, their families, staff and the wider community. We’ve turned comments off as it is important that public and political discussion remains grounded in accurate information and that harmful speculation is avoided.

He said: “The thing I most enjoy as an optometrist is helping people. Someone can come in in pain, and it’s really rewarding to be able to do something to help.”

If you are experiencing eye pain or have an urgent concern about your eyes, you can get a free urgent eye examination at your nearest high street optician.

An urgent eye examination is more in-depth than a routine sight test and can help with minor eye injuries, red or infected eyes, a foreign body in the eye and sudden changes in vision.

If you have an urgent sight problem, you can phone or walk into your closest opticians, and the examination will be free of charge under the NHS.

Knowing where to go for the right medical help isn't always easy.

The Emergency Unit is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to treat emergency and life-threatening conditions only.

If you are not sure whether your condition is an emergency, visit the NHS 111 Wales website or call 111.

The NHS 111 Wales call operators will advise you on the right place to get treatment for your condition - this may be the Urgent Out of Hours Service, the Minor Injuries Unit, your GP, a community pharmacy or the Emergency Unit.

⭐ Meet our August , Ellie Jones!

Ellie Jones, a Staff Nurse on the Acute Stroke Unit at University Hospital of Wales, has been named August's Health Hero after being nominated by a patient's wife for the care and support she provided following her husband's stroke, aged just 38.

Ellie joined Cardiff and Vale University Health Board almost two years ago as a newly qualified nurse. After completing a student placement on the Acute Stroke Unit, she enjoyed it so much that she decided to stay after qualifying.

Ellie looks after patients in the early stages of stroke, providing specialist care, monitoring and treatment, often within hours of them arriving at hospital.

Ellie was nominated by a patient's wife, who wanted to recognise the difference she made during her husband's stay on the ward. She said:

"This nurse in particular was caring for my husband when he came through A&E after having a stroke. He was admitted to C4 Stroke Ward, where he was looked after by Ellie. My husband is only 38 years of age and he's never experienced being ill or being in hospital before, so he was scared and couldn't understand what was happening to him.

"She took time out to explain to him what was happening and what treatments he needed and why, even though she was busy. And with the endless questions my husband had, she took time to sit and explain everything to him, which made him feel so much more at ease.

"She was extremely knowledgeable and even did little things like changing his blood pressure cuff to a different size to make him more comfortable. She was kind and funny and honestly helped him feel more relaxed during his stay on the ward.

"Nothing was too much trouble, and she even took the time to get to know him. She made him feel less embarrassed about being so young on a stroke ward. I work for the Health Board myself and am surrounded by good nurses, and I have to say she stood out for me when I came to visit because of how good she was at her job."

After an extraordinary nursing career spanning more than four decades, Ceinwen Frost will be retiring from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board next month. Ceinwen studied nursing at King's College Hospital in London before coming to Cardiff in 1986 to train as a midwife. She has since undertaken a variety of roles including Midwife, Health Visitor, Senior Nurse, Lead Nurse and, most recently, as a Practice and Professional Development Nurse.

As she reflects on her career, Ceinwen credits every role with shaping the nurse and person she became. She encourages colleagues to embrace new opportunities, value their transferable skills, treat everyone with kindness and respect, support one another, and remain proud of the nursing profession.

Throughout her career, Ceinwen has demonstrated a passion for supporting families at some of the most significant moments in their lives and championing high standards of nursing practice. Those who have worked with Ceinwen will know her for her dedication, wisdom, compassion and commitment to developing future generations of nurses. Her final role as a Practice and Professional Development Nurse gave her the opportunity to share her extensive knowledge and experience, helping others to grow and succeed.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have been congratulated by the National Institute for Health Research for their contribution to the EVOCC research trial.

The three Health Boards were recognised for their collaborative work on the study by Professor Athanasios Thanos Saratzis, NIHR Research Professor and Professor of Vascular Surgery, and Chief Investigator for the EVOCC Trial.

"This level of cross-site cooperation is essential for the success of multicentre trials such as EVOCC. Explaining these "joint efforts are instrumental in advancing vascular research in Wales."

“Over the past seven months, the team has achieved seven patient randomisations into the EVOCC trial—an exceptional level of consistent recruitment. This performance is particularly impressive given the current national research climate, where capacity constraints and limited funding continue to challenge trial delivery across the NHS.” said the letter from Professor Saratiz.
