If you’ve received an abnormal smear test result, you may be referred to colposcopy at the University Hospital of Wales.

There is nothing to worry about, a colposcopy is simply an in-depth examination to check whether there are abnormal cells on your cervix, and if so, how serious they are.

Being called for a colposcopy doesn’t necessarily mean you have cervical cancer, its just another important part of the cervical screening process.

The Colposcopy Team at Cardiff and Vale are there to ensure the procedure goes as smoothly as possible and can answer any questions you may have ahead of time. Laura, Zuzanna and the team will do their best to ensure you are comfortable and reassured through the process.

Although it may feel uncomfortable, attending your smear test and follow up colposcopy appointment is an essential step in protecting yourself from cervical cancer.

Alex Hicks, from Cardiff, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in his 30s. Despite some family history of the condition, it was still a shock to develop the condition at such a young age.

While it hasn't always been easy, Alex tells us how he's managed to maintain his health since and some of the support he's found along the way 🙌

Today is Estates and Facilities Day, a chance to celebrate colleagues in Capital, Estates and Facilities roles who play a vital part in the day-to-day running of our hospital sites.

From maintaining safe environments to supporting patients, their dedication helps the Health Board care for patients every hour of every day.

The All-Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) has been recognised for its groundbreaking work in cancer innovation, securing two awards and receiving a further two nominations at the 2026 Moondance Cancer Awards.

Held on 11 June at Depot, Cardiff, the awards celebrate the outstanding individuals and teams across NHS Wales and its partner organisations who deliver, lead and innovate cancer services.

The AWMGS Solid Tumour Team was one of nine partners in the Southeast Wales Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) Team, which won the Cancer Treatment Award in the Innovation & Improvement category.

This award recognises a truly collaborative, patient-centred approach to managing CUP, a complex cancer that is often diagnosed at an advanced stage.

You can support our NHS colleagues by only attending the unit in a life-threatening emergency.

An emergency could be things like chest pain or difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, loss of consciousness, severe blood loss and severe allergic reactions.

If you are not sure whether your condition is an emergency, visit the NHS 111 Wales website or call 111.

NHS 111 Wales call operators will advise you on the right place to get treatment for your condition - this may be the Urgent Out of Hours Service, the Minor Injuries Unit, your GP, your community pharmacy or the Emergency Unit.

We need your help to keep our patients safe and continue providing lifesaving care to those who need it most.

The Cwtch, based within the specialist mental health unit at University Hospital Llandough offers a welcoming place where patients can take part in activities, learn new skills or spend time with others in a relaxed, informal setting.

This is Karen, the mental health nurse who leads the Inpatient Activities Team at Hafan y Coed.

Karen has worked in Adult Mental Health Services in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board since 2007. “I always wanted to do this job,” she said.

Karen has opened the activities up to all patients on the unit. All are welcome to drop in from 9.15am – 6.45pm every day.

Activities range from arts and crafts, soap making and journalling, to gardening, music, karaoke, Tai Chi, chess, relaxation sessions and a beauty group. For those who prefer something more informal there’s the option to play pool, darts or sit and talk.

“Patients can try something new or create something to brighten up their room,” said Karen. “I like to see the social side too. You see friendships between patients starting and developing.

“It can be a lot of fun. When patients go out smiling, I feel like we’ve achieved something.” ⭐
