Fieldwork 2026 ✅

Another incredible trip trying to interpret the mind-blowing geology and scenery of Santo Antão!

In collaboration with local Cape Verdean organisations: INGT (National Institute for Territorial Management) and INMG (National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics), Ricardo Ramalho, Ben Ireland, Pablo González (CSIC) and I conducted a gravity survey of the area. Our results will hope to reveal insights into the internal structure of the south-west of the island. 🌋

Gwaith maes 2026 ✅

Taith anhygoel arall yn trio dehongli daeareg a golygfeydd sy’n wirioneddol syfrdanol Santo Antão!

Mewn cydweithrediad â sefydliadau lleol o Cape Verde: INGT (Sefydliad Cenedlaethol Rheoli Tiriogaethol) ac INMG (Sefydliad Cenedlaethol Meteoroleg a Geoffiseg), fe wnaeth Ricardo Ramalho, Ben Ireland, Pablo González (CSIC) a minnau gynnal arolwg disgyrchiant o’r ardal.

Rydyn ni’n gobeithio bydd y canlyniadau’n datgelu mewnwelediadau newydd i strwythur mewnol de-orllewin yr ynys. 🌋

Hear from our expert in risk communication tomorrow, Tues April 14, as our 'Quaking Earth' series continues with our penultimate lecture of 2026.

We're excited to hear from Dr Lara Mani from Cambridge University as we discuss 'Risk Communication in Volcanic, Multihazard Contexts'.

Earthquakes and the geological hazards they trigger, including landslides and tsunamis pose serious threats to communities worldwide, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable in society.

Free to all, our public lectures take place at 18:30 in the Wallace Lecture Theatre in Main Building.

Bydd cyfle i glywed gan ein harbenigwr ar gyfathrebu risg ar 14 Ebrill, wrth i’n cyfres Quaking Earth barhau gyda’r ddarlith olaf ond un yn 2026.

Edrychwn ymlaen at glywed gan Dr Lara Mani o Brifysgol Caergrawnt wrth drafod ‘Cyfathrebu Risg mewn Cyd-destunau Folcanig ac Aml-beryglus’.

Mae daeargrynfeydd a’r peryglon daearegol y maent yn eu sbarduno, gan gynnwys tirlithriadau a tswnamis, yn peri bygythiadau difrifol i gymunedau ledled y byd, gan effeithio’n anghymesur ar y rhai mwyaf agored i niwed mewn cymdeithas.

Am ddim i bawb, mae ein darlithoedd cyhoeddus yn cael eu cynnal am 18:30 yn Theatr Ddarlithio Wallace yn y Prif Adeilad.

We recently had a fantastic visit to Howardian Primary School, where we explored the exciting topic of earthquakes and volcanoes🌋!

Our session was led by Dr Shasta Marrero and Professor Tiago Alves, who led interactive games and presentations designed to introduce the science behind these natural phenomena.

To bring the topic to life, we used VR headsets to give the students a chance to experience a volcanic eruption, which was a big hit, as well as try their hand at an interactive evacuation game.

We brought along resources to support Earth sciences learning and spark interest in science, including books from a British Council project aimed at encouraging STEM studies among girls. The students also got to enjoy scale models of the Earth’s structure and hands-on props to demonstrate seismic waves, while we added some fun with hi-vis gear and helmets for everyone to try on!

--------------------------------------------------------------

Cawsom ymweliad gwych yn ddiweddar ag ysgol leol, lle buom yn archwilio’r pwnc cyffrous o ddaeargrynfeydd a llosgfynyddoedd 🌋

Arweiniwyd y sesiwn gan Dr Diana Maria Contreras Mojica, PhD, ABCP, FHEA, Dr Shasta Marrero a’r Athro Tiago Alves, a arweiniodd weithgareddau rhyngweithiol a chyflwyniadau wedi’u cynllunio i gyflwyno’r wyddoniaeth y tu ôl i’r ffenomenau naturiol hyn.

Er mwyn dod â’r pwnc yn fyw, defnyddiwyd sbectol VR i roi cyfle i’r disgyblion brofi ffrwydrad llosgfynydd, a oedd yn boblogaidd iawn, yn ogystal â rhoi cynnig ar gêm wacáu ryngweithiol.

Daethpwyd hefyd ag adnoddau i gefnogi dysgu yn y gwyddorau daear ac i ennyn diddordeb mewn gwyddoniaeth, gan gynnwys llyfrau o brosiect y Cyngor Prydeinig sydd â’r nod o annog merched i astudio STEM. Cafodd y disgyblion hefyd gyfle i weld modelau graddfa o strwythur y Ddaear a defnyddio adnoddau ymarferol i ddangos tonnau seismig. Ychwanegwyd elfen hwyliog hefyd gyda festiau hi-vis a helmedau i bawb roi cynnig arnynt!

Ar y Diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod hwn, rydym yn dathlu effaith fyd-eang ymchwilwyr yn .

Yn ddiweddar, cyflwynodd Dr Diana Contreras Mojica ganlyniadau ei phrosiectau sy’n mynd i’r afael ag anghydraddoldeb rhywedd mewn STEM yn 9fed Gynhadledd Ryngwladol Dyfodol Menywod (FOW 26) yn Bali, Indonesia. Mae’r gwaith yn archwilio sut y gellir mynd i’r afael â’r rhwystrau sy’n wynebu menywod ym maes gwyddoniaeth a pheirianneg, o addysg gynnar hyd at yrfaoedd proffesiynol.

Mae’r ymchwil yn cynnwys prosiectau a ariennir gan raglen Wellcome Trust Ignite a’r British Council, ac fe’i cyflawnir mewn cydweithrediad â Phrifysgol Ain Shams a Phrifysgol Cairo, gan helpu i adeiladu partneriaethau rhyngwladol sy’n cefnogi menywod mewn STEM.

Daeth y gynhadledd â 182 o gyfranogwyr ynghyd o fwy na 30 o wledydd, gan greu gofod byd-eang ar gyfer rhannu syniadau, ymchwil a phrofiadau er mwyn hyrwyddo cydraddoldeb rhywedd mewn gwyddoniaeth.

This InternationalWomensDay, we’re celebrating the global impact of researchers at .

Professor Diana Contreras Mojica recently presented the results of her projects tackling gender disparity in STEM at the 9th International Conference on the Future of Women (FOW 26) in Bali, Indonesia. The work explores how barriers for women in science and engineering can be addressed from early education through to professional careers.

The research includes projects funded by the Wellcome Trust Ignite programme and the British Council, and is delivered in collaboration with Ain Shams University and Cairo University, helping to build international partnerships that support women in STEM.

The conference brought together 182 participants from more than 30 countries, creating a global space for sharing ideas, research and experiences to advance gender equality in science.
