Tomorrow’s Composition Seminar features PhD student Phi Yaan-Zek, who will explore rhythmic techniques in his composition 𝘛𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥, written for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The piece is due to be performed in March 2027. All are very welcome to attend.

In this seminar I will be discussing some of the rhythmic devices that I have used in composing my piece “Tinkinswood” for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, due to be performed on March 3rd 2027. The presentation will explore a few examples of how I displace and combine different metres to achieve a variety of polyrhythmic effects, as well as explaining the contextual background through which I’ve developed these compositional processes. Lastly, I will examine my aesthetic use of these techniques and my compositional rationale for employing them.

Camões and the Portuguese Spirit: A Piano Tribute

Join us next Tuesday 13 October for a special piano recital celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Portuguese poet Luís de Camões.

Portuguese pianist Ana Beatriz Ferreira presents a programme of music by Portuguese composers Alexandre Rey Colaço, José Vianna da Motta, Fernando Lopes-Graça and our very own staff composer Pedro Faria Gomes, alongside a work by Franz Liszt inspired by Donizetti’s opera Dom Sébastien. The music will be interwoven with readings from Camões’s poetry.

LSO are recruiting up to four composers to become Soundhub Members in 2026/27 and twenty composers to join as Soundhub Associates.
