Prep Sports Day done right!

Our Year 1-6 Sports Day kicked off with a brilliant house parade led by our Year 6 captains, followed by action-packed events – from howler throw to sack race, egg & spoon to sprints (and plenty of watery fun to cool off).

Huge congrats to everyone in Dewi House for lifting the cup.

And a big shoutout to all the parents who took on Cipi’s fitness challenge – you smashed it!

The excitement is really building as our oldest Prep girls prepare to take to the stage in Shrek the Musical Jr., with tickets now very nearly sold out!

Rehearsals have stepped up in recent weeks, and the energy, enthusiasm and dedication from the cast is wonderful to see.

To build on that anticipation, we’ve been back through the archives, revisiting some of our past Year 5 and 6 productions, including We Will Rock You, Bugsy Malone and The Lion King and celebrating the fantastic talent and creativity in our school community.

From Monday, the stage build gets underway, turning the Great Hall into the magical Kingdom of Far Far Away – we can’t wait to welcome audiences for what promises to be a truly unforgettable show.

A proud moment for the Howells, and for Howell's.

We are delighted to celebrate an extraordinary achievement by Mrs Janey Howell OBE, our Chair of Governors, and her Hywelian daughter, Dr Gabriella Howell MBE, who were honoured together at a rare joint investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Mrs Howell was awarded an OBE in recognition of her exceptional civic leadership and longstanding commitment to education, inclusion, and community service across Wales and beyond. As Chair of Governors, her dedication continues to shape the vision and future of our school.

Dr Gabriella Howell, an alumna of Howell’s, received an MBE for her inspiring work in heritage preservation and philanthropy across the Commonwealth. Her transformative leadership has seen Antigua’s historic Government House reimagined as a public museum, bringing history to life in innovative and inclusive ways.

Together, they are also making a significant impact here in Cardiff, serving as trustees of the Museum of Cardiff and playing a leading role in its exciting relocation to Cardiff Castle—helping to ensure the capital’s rich and diverse stories are shared with future generations.

This remarkable mother-and-daughter achievement is a testament to the values we champion at Howell’s: leadership, service, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world.

Congratulations, Mrs Howell and Dr Howell—we are incredibly proud of you both.

Year 5 Step Back in Time at Big Pit

Year 5 enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to the Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenavon, on Thursday 4th June, as part of their Victorian history topic.

The highlight of the trip was an unforgettable underground tour, where the girls descended 90 metres below ground into a real coal mine. Guided by a former miner, they explored the narrow tunnels and experienced firsthand what life was like for Victorian workers and how girls as young as five would have stood alone for up to 12 hours, working as trappers, opening and closing ventilation doors in the dark, all for a penny a day. This authentic setting gave the girls a powerful insight into the harsh realities of coal mining during the 19th century.

Originally opened in 1880, Big Pit preserves the history of coal mining and allows visitors to walk through the same types of tunnels used by Victorian miners. The visit provided a meaningful connection to the past and prompted thoughtful discussions about how working conditions have changed over time and the challenges people faced during the Victorian era.

The day was both enjoyable and inspiring, the girls returned full of enthusiasm and new knowledge, they were also happy that they never had to go down the mines to work in cold, dark conditions!

The wait is over… our school production for this year is announced.

After months of guessing and growing excitement, the big reveal was shared in assembly with a special video (check it out below 👇).

The buzz has been incredible, and we can’t wait to get started on what promises to be a fantastic show!

Students from Year 5 all the way up to Year 13 are invited to be part of this exciting production, whether on stage or behind the scenes — there’s something for everyone. Auditions begin on 17th June — we’re so excited to see all the talent our students have to offer!

This week, Year 6 had an exciting and hands-on visit from our School Nurse, Leasa, who led an engaging session on basic first aid skills. They began by exploring the contents of a first aid kit, discussing what items are essential and why each one is important in an emergency situation.

The session then moved on to practical activities, where the girls had the opportunity to practise bandaging techniques on one another. They approached this with great enthusiasm, demonstrating teamwork as well as care and attention to detail.

It was a fantastic opportunity for them to build confidence, develop important life skills and gain a better understanding of how to respond in everyday situations.
