Built on solid foundations in year 1, the course is designed to allow the student to develop their own interests in years 2 and 3 with an opportunity to undertake supported research leading to the submission of a final year dissertation. In the 21st century criminology, as viewed from the perspective of the art of investigation, is dynamic and challenging, characterised by complexity and change. T

he application of science, analytical techniques, forensic psychology and criminological theory to the process of the criminal investigation process demands a unique set of skills and knowledge. In conjunction with the formal teaching we actively encourage students to volunteer with a range of organisations working across our communities from the Special Constabulary to Youth Offending. This programme provides a strong academic base for students seeking to meet the increasing demand for graduates within statutory criminal justice agencies such as the police, HM Revenue and Customs, the Serious Organised Crime Agency, the probation and prison services. Alongside these traditional careers, we recognise a wide range of potential opportunities in the private and the third sector. Graduates have moved on to work with charities who increasingly are taking on work in crime prevention and offender management as well as investigation careers in the financial sector. Recognising the demand by employers for transferable skills, we embed these within the curriculum in order to increase your chances when it comes to that all important application and interview. The programme also provides a suitable knowledge base for a range of postgraduate or vocational programmes. The programme is taught by academic staff with extensive teaching, research and professional expertise in this field bringing together a wealth of knowledge and experience in the criminal justice sector. Guest speakers are also invited to expand on key areas and we offer a range of activities, with professional colleagues, to support you through the challenges studying at university brings.
