Since qualifying as a social worker from ARU in 2014, Charlotte Jamieson has built a career defined by courage, compassion and an unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable people. Her journey began in frontline child protection in Essex—a role secured through her final year placement—but it was a child trafficking case early in her London career that set the direction for the decade that followed. From that moment, Charlotte dedicated herself to combating modern slavery and human trafficking both in the UK and around the world.

Since graduating from ARU, Tamjeed Ullah has built a successful career in regulatory compliance and Anti–Money Laundering, specialising in transaction monitoring, enhanced due diligence, and financial crime risk across global platforms. 🌍

"My time at ARU played a big role in shaping this path. Studying International Management gave me a strong foundation in critical thinking, global business operations, risk awareness, and regulatory frameworks."

ARU is among the first institutions in England to receive an important national award recognising its work to tackle gender-based violence.

Alongside the University of Warwick, ARU has been awarded the EmilyTest Charter Award by the Scottish charity EmilyTest.

Already awarded to a number of universities and colleges in Scotland, the Charter was piloted in England last year to ensure alignment with the English higher education system. Following this successful pilot, ARU is now among the first institutions in England to achieve the Charter Award, reflecting its sector-leading work in this area.

ARU has taken a comprehensive, university-wide approach to tackling GBV. Alongside its Counselling and Wellbeing Service, which provides confidential counselling, mental health advice and wellbeing support, ARU has partnered with Sharon Livermore MBE of Domestic Abuse Education.

For Tracy Foster OBE, the journey from ARU student to national leader has been driven by a deep commitment to protecting and empowering others 💙

After studying Social Work and Specialist Social Work at ARU, Tracy built a career supporting survivors of domestic abuse. Now Quality and Practice Lead (Domestic Abuse Specialism) at Spurgeons, she works closely with women, young people, and communities—guided by values of respect, honesty, trust, and partnership.

In 2023, Tracy was appointed Chief Guide for Girlguiding, a role she describes as an “amazing, thrilling, and a real privilege.” Having been part of Girlguiding since she was a Brownie, the organisation helped shape her confidence and resilience—and now she proudly champions girls and young women across the UK. 🌈

Her lifelong dedication to Girlguiding was recognised nationally when she was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours—an incredible achievement and a testament to her impact.

Across ARU, staff, students, alumni and partners are exploring how AI will have changed the way we work, live and learn.

We’re inviting our alumni community to be part of an inspiring conversation at the “Imagine ARU in 2036” Cambridge Symposium 🌟

This is a culmination of a three month open experimental phase, where students, staff and alumni have shared thoughts and ideas about possible futures for ARU in ten years’ time aligning with the development and launch of our new 10-year strategy.

The symposium will showcase the most interesting ideas, and also prompt further discussion and ideation around the theme. It will also be an opportunity to hear from local and national experts in AI and Futures, to give their take.

June is Pride Month, an opportunity to recognise the influence and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community.

We’re proud to highlight the story of Dr Christopher Owen, an ARU PhD graduate whose work explores systemic oppression and intersectionality through English literature. His research shines a light on how cultural narratives can both reinforce inequalities—such as racism, sexism and ableism—and act as powerful tools for change.

Christopher went on to found Coliberate, a social enterprise focused on driving long-term, meaningful change.

His journey is one of leadership, courage and innovation—from his time at ARU to leading national conversations and campaigns for justice.
