Repost: Chester Medical School

Our MSc Orthopaedics students recently took part in a hands-on practical session exploring balance assessment, muscle force testing, and jump performance analysis as part of a bespoke return-to-sport protocol for individuals recovering from ACL injuries.

Working alongside Chartered Physiotherapist Jason Oswell and Vortex Strength & Conditioning Coach Sam Latham, students gained first-hand experience of the evidence-based testing and rehabilitation strategies used to help athletes return safely to peak performance.

This is more than classroom learning - it's an opportunity to develop the practical skills, clinical knowledge, and industry connections needed to excel in a career in musculoskeletal health, rehabilitation, and sports performance.

University of Chester students and Student Race Advocates, Raeesah Khan and Hussna Waka, have co-authored a theoretical perspectives paper alongside Dr Chandrika Devarakonda, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

This work stems from their impactful contribution to terminology reform, particularly supporting the move away from the term BAME. The paper explores that while collective labels can help make inequalities visible in education, they can also oversimplify the diverse communities they aim to represent.

By drawing on their lived and professional experiences, the authors highlight how language can shape identity, representation and inclusion and why adopting more precise, reflective terminology is essential for meaningful change.

Raeesah said: “We are delighted that our paper and abstract have been accepted at two international conferences. One of these will also publish the paper in its digital library, allowing our work to contribute to wider conversations around educational discourse, diversity governance and inclusive institutional practice.”

Hussna added: “We are looking forward to representing the University internationally and continuing to contribute to timely discussions on educational discourse and diversity governance.”

Kathryn Leighton, HR Manager, Organisational Development and Equality, said: “This is a fantastic example of how student voice and academic collaboration can drive meaningful institutional change. Raeesah and Hussna’s work reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and we are incredibly proud to see their research gaining international recognition.”
