🙌 Congratulations to Alumna Abigail Gray (2026), who has been awarded the 2026 Vanessa Cotton Scholarship, recognising outstanding emerging talent within the meetings and events industry.

The scholarship honours the legacy of Vanessa Cotton, a highly respected leader in the UK meetings and events sector, who sadly passed away in 2010 following a battle with cancer.

As part of the award, Abigail has secured a role with BCD Meetings & Events (BCD M&E) as a Graduate Event Co-ordinator within the company's Meetings Management Life Sciences team.

🍏 Are you interested in nutrition, health and science, or considering a career helping people live healthier lives?

The University of Chester is hosting a series of Dietetics Awareness Sessions across October, November and December, offering prospective students the opportunity to find out more about studying Dietetics and the profession itself.

📝 Led by experienced NHS dietitians, University staff, current students and recent graduates, the sessions provide valuable insight into the varied role of a dietitian. Attendees will also have the chance to take part in practical workshops, specialist nutrition activities and interactive sessions.

🔙 With Welcome Week well underway, we thought we'd share a few throwback photographs from the 1960s, featuring the second intake of women students at the then University College Chester in 1962, alongside female students outside Margaret House in 1966.

🎈 This year also marks a special milestone for the University as we celebrate 65 years since welcoming women to study at Chester.

To mark the occasion, alumnae from across the decades were welcomed back earlier this summer for a special celebration to share their memories and reflect on how opportunities for women in higher education have evolved over the years.

The University was saddened to learn of the death of Dame Esther Rantzen DBE.

Dame Esther received an honorary doctorate from the University in November 2014 at Chester Cathedral, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to British media and her charity work through Childline and The Silver Line.

The thoughts of everyone at the University are with Dame Esther's family and loved ones at this difficult time.

🔬 From a Village in Nepal: Reflections on Research, Leadership and Social Change

Join the University this October for the inaugural lecture of Professor Padam Simkhada, who will reflect on a remarkable journey from a village in Nepal to becoming an internationally recognised researcher and university leader.

Drawing on his experiences in education, research and international collaboration, Professor Simkhada will explore how universities can help address some of society's most pressing challenges and create positive social change.

The lecture is free to attend and will be available both in person and online.

💻 University of Chester Alumnus Reza Razm, who spent long days developing his IT skills in the University library, is now helping businesses grow online through his own digital support company.

The origins of Reza’s business came through his experiments with cybersecurity, automation, e-commerce and developing AI technologies while studying at Chester.

🏆 His academic work was recognised by the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec), where he received the Student of the Year - Best Project Award (Undergraduate) for his university project. He was also nominated for the Fred Piper Award.

After graduating with First Class Honours in Cybersecurity in 2024, Reza founded Hand On Web, a Chester-based company that helps organisations harness AI, automation, cybersecurity and digital technologies to solve practical challenges and grow online.

Now based at the University's Riverside Innovation Centre, Reza is passionate about supporting local businesses. Hand On Web has already helped more than 10 organisations, the majority of which are based in Chester and the surrounding area.

⚽🏋️ Last month, as part of Chester FC's pre-season preparations, University of Chester alumnus and health and wellbeing coach Ash Armstrong welcomed Professor Jamie Highton and students from the Sport and Exercise Sciences programme to carry out strength testing with first-team players.

The testing explored running ability and player readiness ahead of the club's National League North campaign.

Ash, who studied Sport and Exercise Sciences before completing a Master's in Sports Sciences (Strength and Conditioning) at the University, now runs the OPH Performance Centre at the Deva Community Stadium, home of Chester FC.

🎂 Happy Birthday to us! 🎈

🎉 This year marks the 21st anniversary of University College Chester becoming the University of Chester, after being granted University status in 2005 by the Privy Council.

⛪ The University's official launch took place later that year, with a procession and ceremony at Chester Cathedral, where the 6th Duke of Westminster was installed as the University's first Chancellor.
