The University welcomed Tim Astbury, son of former Chester College Principal Canon Stanley Astbury, to campus for a special visit celebrating his family’s longstanding connection to the institution.

Tim is the son of Canon Stanley Astbury, who served as Principal of Chester College from 1935 to 1953. During his visit, Tim, along with family friend Pam, shared personal memories and historic insights into life at the College during an important time in its history.

Born in the Oswald Room of the Principal’s House, now known as Senate House, Tim returned to the very room where he was born. During his tour of the building, he shared fond anecdotes about his time living there - even recalling how he would hide in the dumbwaiter.

Tim also attended the cutting of the first sod ceremony as a young boy in 1939 alongside his mother, Mrs Ida Astbury, marking the beginning of construction of what would later become the Fisher and Astbury accommodation buildings on the Exton Park site.

As part of the visit, Tim brought with him the original spade used by his mother during the 1939 ceremony, now a prized family possession. He generously donated the commemorative plaque from the spade to the University’s archive, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

🖊️ Congratulations to alumna Rachel Munro (2009) on the publication of her science fiction thriller Ephemeral Power, published by Olympia Publishers.

Ephemeral Power explores family secrets, hidden abilities and the struggle for control. As paramedics rush to the scene of a shocking incident, a young man’s extraordinary powers are unleashed in a moment of desperation. With his family torn apart and his future uncertain, he must navigate a world where danger lurks at every turn.

🔥 Rachel shared that the idea for Ephemeral Power first emerged during a creative writing assignment in her second year at university, sparking a strong desire to develop the idea through to publication.

📖 In a previous Alumni newsletter edition, we showcased one of the most treasured items from our Alumni Archive: a 1935 Bible, donated to the University in 1955 by Alumni of the then Chester Diocesan Training College, now the University of Chester, in memory of a fellow student, Billy King.

Over time, the Bible had fallen into disrepair, with its front and back covers becoming detached and the spine significantly damaged.

🔨 To help preserve this valuable piece of University history, we recently commissioned a specialist restoration from Chester Bookbinders, led by owner Phill Woods, a local craftsman with more than 40 years’ experience.

We’re delighted to share that it has now been sympathetically conserved and returned to the archive, ensuring the legacy of Billy King and the Alumni who honoured him lives on.
