🤖 Taking Essex innovation to the world stage.

We’re incredibly proud of CSEE students Ane Sæther Jensen and
Muhammad Fuad Farooqi, whose work on a pioneering robotic surgery system will be showcased at the 2026 IEEE International Conference on Cyborg and Bionic Systems in Munich.

Developed within Essex’s Robotics for Under Millimetre Interventions (RUMI) Lab, the system combines robotics, magnetic guidance and touch-based feedback to help surgeons carry out delicate procedures inside blood vessels more safely and effectively. It could also allow surgeons to operate remotely, reducing their exposure to X-rays during procedures.

The project began as Ane’s undergraduate capstone project and has since been developed further with PhD student Fuad, resulting in an internationally recognised paper accepted for presentation at the conference. Fuad has also received a US$1,500 IEEE Robotics and Automation Society travel grant to present the team’s work. 👏

Led by Dr Ali Kafash Hoshiar, the research was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and carried out in collaboration with clinicians from East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

It’s fantastic to see our students and researchers combining engineering and healthcare expertise to develop technologies with the potential to improve patient care — and to see their work recognised on an international stage. 🌍

We are delighted to share that we have secured ~£300,000 of Innovate UK funding for "EAST-AI Studio – Essex Accelerated Skills & Transformation in Generative & Agentic AI", led by the !

A huge congratulations to CSEE's Dr Haider Raza who is the lead on this project aiming to bridge the gap between learning AI and actually deploying AI in the workplace.

A huge thank you to Professor Hani Hagras, Professor Reinhold Scherer, Corinne Bacon, colleagues across CSEE, our Faculty, Research and Enterprise Office, and everyone who contributed to developing and supporting the proposal!

🤖 From pioneering research to real-world impact.

We’re proud to celebrate a major milestone for CSEE's spin-out Versatile RobotX, which has secured more than £1 million in investment and innovation funding to accelerate the commercialisation of its intelligent agricultural robots.

Founded by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier and Dr Vishuu Mohan, Versatile RobotX is using artificial intelligence, machine vision and advanced robotics to help tackle some of the biggest challenges facing agriculture – from labour shortages to productivity, sustainability and food security. 🌱

The technology has already been put to the test through extensive field trials with leading UK growers, including Wilkin & Sons Ltd. and JEPCO.
The new funding will help the team move closer to commercial deployment, supporting product development, manufacturing readiness and the expansion of affordable, field-ready robotic systems.

It’s fantastic to see research and expertise from CSEE translating into innovative technology with the potential to make a real difference to farmers and food production in the UK and beyond. 👏

🌍 Recently at the 11th International Digital Public Health Conference (DPH 2026) in Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸 (24–26 June), CSEE’s Dr Sefki Kolozali delivered a keynote on Internet of Things for Healthcare and Accessibility at the 2nd International Workshop on Architecture-Based IoT and Artificial Intelligence to Support Public Health.

Sefki also took part in an expert panel on digital health technologies and presented the paper, 'Safety-Prioritised Multimodal Navigation for Edge Smart Glasses with Constrained On-Device Language Models'

The paper was co-authored with CSEE's Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier, Dr Vishwanathan Mohan, and former MSc students Alireza Kalantarhormozi, Abdullah Ahmad, Ali Radwan, Ahmed Jafer, Soran Ghaderi, and Mustafa Mustafa. This research began as part of the students’ CE903 MSc project under Sefki’s supervision and was subsequently developed into a peer-reviewed conference publication!

Congratulations to everyone involved on this fantastic achievement! 🎉
