Our University flag, on top of the Albert Sloman Library, is flying at half-mast in memory of Ray Plummer.

Ray first came to Essex as a mature student, graduating with a BA in History in 2000 and an MA in Criminology in 2002.

He later worked as a Research Assistant before joining Student Support as a Notetaker, and Exams as an Examination Scribe and Reader. In each of these roles, Ray’s dedication, kindness, and good humour touched everyone who had the privilege of working with him.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.

Many of our alumni will remember Bishop Thomas McMahon from his time as the University's Catholic Chaplain.

Our University flag, on top of the Albert Sloman Library, will be flying at half-mast today in memory of Bishop Thomas McMahon.

Bishop Thomas McMahon was the sixth and longest - serving Bishop of Brentwood - holding the position from 1980 to 2014. Between 1972 and 1980, as Father Thomas McMahon, he was the University’s Catholic Chaplain.

His involvement in the life and affairs of the county of Essex, and contribution to our University community, was recognised in 1991 when he was awarded an Essex Honorary Doctorate.
