We've loved meeting so many new and familiar faces on the Squares this week!

So, here's a quick reintroduction: we're your friendly Sustainability team 💚

Our mission is to help make Essex a greener place to live, work and study. Whether it's reducing waste, supporting biodiversity, promoting sustainable travel, creating energy saving initiatives or getting involved in campaigns and events, we're here to help.

Watch this space for more sustainability updates throughout the year 🌱✨

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕
We all love coffee on campus, so much so that our outlets sold 69,000 coffees last year!

Our Grounds Team loves coffee too, using leftover coffee grounds to create compost brewed right here on campus. But with all those coffees comes a lot of disposable cups, 63,486 to be precise.

Unfortunately, these cups can’t be recycled, which means a lot of waste ends up in the bin each year. In fact, if you stacked all those cups used over the course of a year, they would reach 7 Km high! That’s more than the distance from the University to the City centre.

Bringing a reusable cup not only gets you money off your morning brew but also helps stop those disposable cups from piling up.

We may be a little late to the party, but we’re celebrating SDG Flag Day in style! 🌍💙

From helping departments embed the Sustainable Development Goals into teaching and learning, to raising awareness through events across campus, we’re working with our community to tackle global challenges and create a more sustainable future for all.

Don’t forget the team will be out on the Squares next week during Welcome. Make sure to come by, play some games and chat more about what sustainability means for our campus.

Who's up for some tomato chutney?

Our Grounds Team recently discovered dozens of tomatoes growing among the flowers in one of our Graduation planters. It's a fun example of how composting, plant propagation and waste reduction support sustainability at our Colchester Campus.

Head over to our blog to discover how this tomato-tally unexpected guest planted itself in our Graduation Planters: https://ow.ly/VG9k50ZOACl
