Message from Emily Roisin Reid, Director of Student Experience, WMS

Hey folks, how are you all doing? I’m just dropping you a line to say that we’ve set up a LinkedIn page to try to start a bit of WMS community keeping in touch. There are so many areas students are interested in getting in touch about, eg mentorship, access to a wide range of diverse and inspirational role models, across different specialties, career paths, countries(!) But also, for you, we were thinking it would be a good way of hearing different opportunities that come up, including any future alumni events (we’re 25 in 2025, so maybe a reunion party could be on the cards???!!)

We all think of you, and hope you’re doing well! Please consider joining the group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12827072 and if you are still on your old GEP page, can you please post it on there and share the word? Thanks so much in advance 🙏🏼💖🎉

With love and best wishes,

Emily Roisin Reid

Shoutout to any doctors who come from an under-represented background in medicine! We are doing some exploratory research into the factors affecting career decisions of doctors from widening participation backgrounds
We are looking to recruit doctors from different stages of medical training who identify as coming from widening participation backgrounds (please see pre-registration link for more info about if this might be you) to consider participating in our research.
The makeup of doctors studying medicine is not representative of the wider population with some groups under-represented e.g. students from a: lower socio-economic background, minority ethnic background, students with disabilities.
We want to explore the factors affecting the career decisions of doctors who originally came from widening participation backgrounds, and how this affects the decisions you’ve made throughout your training, relating to where you work and in which career pathway.
If you are interested in participating, we would be very grateful if you could read the combined information sheet and consent form via this link.http://warwick.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cIUp2zZMhZOo9oi
If you are still interested in participating, please fill out the pre-registration form here where you can express your interest to take part. This form will collect some initial demographic information and should take no more than five minutes to complete.
Please do not hesitate to contact us further if you would like to discuss any part of this project in more detail.
Please do pass this on to others if you feel they might be interested
Thank you for your time on behalf of Research Team

WP grads read this!

Professor Colin Macdougall and I were involved in the national review of the Foundation Programme, and one of the recommendations we fought for was that we should be doing more collectively to support WP students.

The MSC/HEE have sent the attached invitation for graduates to attend a focus group to discuss barriers for WP students, in terms of transition to FP. Could you please share with anyone you think may be interested?

We think this is really important so please make your voice heard!

I hope you all have a wonderful Xmas - miss you all!

Take care,

Best Wishes

Subject: Help needed - Foundation Programme Widening Participation Focus Groups

Dear trainee,

Please find enclosed a letter from the Health Education England (HEE) Medical Education Reform Programme, regarding a series of focus groups that we are running with Foundation Programme trainees in England in February, which will support the development of our Widening Participation offer.

If you have entered medicine via an undergraduate widening participation programme or identify as having social or protected characteristics that are under-represented in medicine, we would like to learn about your experiences and hear your views about how these could be improved.

Five two-hour focus groups will be held in centres across England – with lunch provided. Please find full details enclosed within, including the URL link to register for an event.

Kind regards,
The Medical Education Reform Programme team

Dear Alumni,

Re: Teaching Opportunity – SJT sessions on Friday 8th November, 4pm - 6pm @ UHCW.

Each year, we put out an invitation to local F1 and F2 doctors to support the finalists at WMS by putting on some SJT preparation evenings.

We are looking for three volunteers who are willing to deliver a set of slides for this year's cohort and come to talk, from experience, about preparing for the SJT. There are three presentations within the session: “Effective communication and Working effectively as part of a team”, “Patient focus and Commitment to Professionalism” and “Coping with pressure” (from the 5 domains on which the SJT is based).

As a thank you for delivering at the session, you will receive a certificate, e-portfolio ticket, and option to have a reference evidencing your involvement in teaching WMS finalists. Dates as follows: Friday 8th November, CSB Lecture Theatre, UHCW

If you're interested, please email me via: [email protected] or message me with your best contact details!

Hope you're all keeping well,

Em ###

Dear Alumni,

1: a message of support and 2: an opportunity to come back and talk to some 2nd year students within the curriculum.

1. Firstly, I'm aware that those of you who are now in F2 have got some deadlines on the horizon. Please let me know if there's anything I can do. I have thought about doing a webinar or FAQ session. Let me know (comment/ reply to this post) if this would be beneficial, or if any of you would like me to cast an eye over any applications, email me directly on: [email protected] - remember to put the deadline in the email!

2. On Thursday 15th November 2pm – 5pm I will be doing some lectures with the 2nd year cohort to do with what would be useful to know at their stage on the course (in terms of what extra-curricular activities are useful, how to manage time etc) and what would have been beneficial to know at an earlier stage. It’s basically 2pm – 3:30pm and then repeat for the other half of the cohort.

I am looking for a range of Warwick alumni to come back and talk about their experiences, from the perspective of what you wish you would have known in start of 2nd year/ or to pass on your words of wisdom.

Send me a DM or an email and I will send you a link with more information. If you are travelling, I will be able to get travel for you paid. I would also be able to offer you a certificate and complete feedback via an e-portfolio ticket if this is helpful to you. Would be great to see some of you again!

Also - please feel free to share to anyone who might not be on here. As I don't really use facebook, I set this up as a page, but in hindsight, think it would have been better as a group! (One day I may get round to doing that...)

Hope you're all keeping well.

Dear Alumni,

A colleague of mine has asked that I circulate this. It's a survey of Warwick students (past and present) from Law, Engineering and Medicine, looking at the extent to which professional courses prepare you for real-life professional working.

Link as follows:
https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/academy/funding/2016-17fundedprojects/learnertoprofessional/survey/

Note from my colleague: (they will need warning that they need to tick the alumni and not student box). We'd be grateful of your support.

Thank you from all us x

Hello again, anyone at Severn of Scotland who is willing to be contactable? Another student query: "I’m torn between a few deaneries and have been trying to find foundation doctors that I can contact, specifically from the Scotland deanery and also Severn deanery"

Thanks so much! xx

Dear Alumni,

I hope you're all keeping well! I had the following query from one of our current finalists, can anyone help?:
"I was wondering whether any of the students in previous year's cohort went to North West England and whether it would be possible to get their contact details from you?"

For those of you in F2, I know that your application to gp/core/ specialty will be coming up shortly. Have a look at some of the things on the core training applicaiton scoring chart if you need inspiration for any last minute things you can get involved with:

http://www.ct1recruitment.org.uk/recruitment-process/applying/application-scoring

For those in F1, now you have settled in, this might be worth you looking at too.

Will be in touch again soon, hope you're all keeping well,

Em x
