👑💂Dr Modupe Jimoh attends Royal Garden Party 💂‍♀️🏰

Dr Modupe Jimoh attended a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on Friday 8th May following the announcement that she had been nominated by the Department for Education to attend in recognition of her outstanding contribution to education and/or children’s social care.

Modupe said of the event:

"It is a great privilege to receive this nomination and recognition. The garden party was a beautiful occasion, with people from all over the country in attendance. It was a pleasure to meet other attendees who were representing the academic community. The tea service was lovely, and it was nice to see the royals taking the time to chat with people. Attendees were free to stroll around the grounds of the garden while enjoying music performed by the Royal band. Overall, it was a lovely and memorable event."

On a previous occasion Modupe had attended the palace as part of the Association of Commonwealth Universities' Centenary Conference, hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, in October 2013 as a PhD Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Warwick. Dr Mozhdeh Mohammadpour Zehaab, a visiting PhD student in the School of Engineering supervised by Dr Hungyen Lin, has been awarded a runner up poster prize at the first Showcase Meeting of the EPSRC NetworkPlus in Terahertz Systems, held on 21–22 April.

Her poster highlighted recent developments in our proposed humidity controlled terahertz time domain spectroscopy technique for probing detailed water properties of anion exchange membranes.

These membranes are critical component in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells and electrolysers, where performance and durability are strongly influenced by how water is absorbed and transported within the membrane structure.

Understanding their water properties is crucial for elucidating ion transport mechanisms and degradation processes, ultimately enabling the development of more efficient and durable energy devices.

This work has brought together researchers from the University of Surrey and the University of South Carolina and is supported by funding from UKRI. More information on the paper can be found in https://doi.org/10.1039/D5TA08440G.

📢PhD Scholarship: Experimental Study of Vortex Dynamics in Rotating Flow

A PhD project in experimental fluid mechanics is available to study fundamental physics governing flows subject to background system rotation.

A research rig on a rotating turntable will be developed. Fluid vortices (eg. vortex rings, bath-tub vortex-like structures) within the rotating reference frame will be studied. Flow-field measurements will use Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The analysis of PIV data requires the development of custom Python routines for image processing.

PhD Scholarship: Medium Voltage Power Electronics for Next-Generation Energy Systems

AI data centres are digital engines, yet ~30% of energy is wasted as heat in power conversion and distribution.

Directly addressing the UK’s Clean Power 2030 and AI Infrastructure priorities, this PhD project pioneers fundamental technologies of Solid-State Transformers to enable highly efficient, reliable, and bi-directional energy flow control.

You will develop next-generation power converters for mission-critical applications: from hyperscale AI hubs to MW-scale EV charging and smart grids.
