Design is all around us — from the cars we drive to the phones we use. It shapes how every product, system and service we interact with works, feels and looks.

We caught up with Nick Golsby, Associate Professor at WMG, to discuss how our Master’s programmes in design inspire, equip and empower the designers of tomorrow.

Drawing on his experience across academia and industry, Nick also explores the evolving design landscape, the growing importance of sustainability, and why design thinking has never mattered more.

Did you know WMG’s first purpose-built facility was called the ‘Austin Rover Advanced Technology Centre’?

In 1986, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya even dug the first turf himself to mark the start of construction - driven by his vision to create a dedicated space where academia and industry could work side by side.

The facility was officially opened in 1990 by former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, marking a major milestone in WMG’s history.

Four decades later, that same spirit of innovation lives on. In 2014, the ATC evolved into the Energy Innovation Centre — officially opened by former politician Rt Hon Sajid Javid — as a hub for cutting-edge battery research and collaboration, continuing our mission to bring together academia and industry.

Two of our brilliant staff members were invited to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this week!

Principal Engineers, James McLaggan and Mark Urbanowski received the invitation in recognition of their authorship of a publicly available report commissioned by the Office for Product Safety and Standards, part of the Department for Business and Trade, to strengthen the evidence base on the causes of battery fires in Personal Light Electric Vehicles, including e-bikes and e-scooters.

James said: “It was a huge privilege to attend the Royal Garden Party, which provided the opportunity to see the King and Queen dedicating their afternoon to speaking with some of the 8,000 guests, as well as exploring the gardens of Buckingham Palace and enjoying excellent tea and cakes!”

Behind-the-scenes experience at Jaguar Land Rover, Solihull 🚗

20 WMG students, accompanied by Professor Karim El Haloui, recently visited the JLR manufacturing site in Solihull.

The group learned about the journey of a vehicle - from the formation of individual body panels through to final assembly and testing. They also explored the history of JLR, viewed full-scale models in production, and saw a display of historic vehicles.

Master’s student Medha Mallikarjuna shared: “The visit was both inspiring and thought-provoking. It was fascinating to realise that every JLR vehicle seen globally originates from this highly coordinated system in Solihull!”
